Here's the deal. I've come to the conclusion that while some pen-style atomizers may die due to broken wires, that's not always the case.

Check out this little video and see what I'm talking about.

I've brought a cold atomizer back from the dead and I'm working on resurrecting a very weak atomizer, now...almost cold...I'm not 100% sure that I can do it but I am 100% sure that it CAN BE DONE...It's just a matter of finding out how.

It's my hope that this video will shed a bit of light on the situation and will get people out there thinking on ways to fix their "dead" atomizers instead of just chucking them out. Between all of the pen-style users out there I'm sure there's hundreds of "dead" atomizers that can be experimented with.

Now, To get a pen-style atomizer apart you grip the bottom band (where it attaches to the battery) with a small vice grips and the upper portion (where the cart attaches) with another small vice grips. Give it a gentle twist (don't want to break the wires) and the thing will pop free. Next, take a thin screwdriver or rod and push the atomizer out of the tube from the cartridge end.

If your wires are intact, you can start playing.

Check out the video.

Excellent!

I'm curious... did you ohm out the coil before starting your tests? The carbonic acid no doubt made a huge difference but I can't help wondering if the action of your manual scraping did "something". Only reason I say that is it's surprising to me that you would feel/measure _zero_ heat even with a healthy carbon buildup. That heat has to go somewhere... a couple degrees change at least?

We should all give a full "shout out" to Terrahon for taking on a very difficult issue in this Video that plagues many of us as to why our atomizers go down hill and then go cold. As we can see, by Terrahon's efforts, that wire and coil breakage is not the reason why the majority of our atomizers fail. Thanks again for stepping up to the plate and devoting your time and effort to help all of our members understand what is going and what can be done----Sun :thumb:

You're welcome, everyone. I hope that this will lead to some good work and research being done to find out what the best solution is. At this point I'm not that far down the path...I've just started the journey. It's going to take a lot of trial and error to figure out what will be the best way to correct the problem.

When Sun proposed that I look into this I was more than happy to do so because I'd like to find a fix for dead atomizers. I don't think they should be viewed as "consumables" and I don't think their handling should reflect them being throw away parts. I think it is our responsibility to find a way to bring them back from the dead but I have failed at that goal, thus far. I'm going to keep working with what I have, though, and will continue to search for a viable answer.

I hope others out there will do the same.

Brilliant idea, Terra.

In elementary school, I did a science project where I put a pork rib in a big jar of Coke and let it sit for 24 hours. I was amazed at what the soda did in that little amount of time, it actually broke the meat down and left a white, polished bone behind. The soda was a muddy, foggy liquid, but that bone was cleaned ... well, to the bone.

I think you might have even better luck if you let the atomizers sit in the soda overnight. And you might try Coke versus Pepsi, it seems to be even more acidic. I'm going to give this a try with an atomizer that seems to be ready to die and I'll let you know what comes of it.

Again, though, brilliant observation, man.

Cuando--you may be right--We are going to give a whole new meaning to taking "The Pepsi Challage" lol--I have 5 sitting in each kind and going to let them soak for a week and see what the results are--Sun

No doubt, Sun. Haha.

Yes coke would work much better than pepsi. If you've ever had corroded battery terminals on your car battery, dump a can of coke on it and watch it eat the corrosion. I learn this 30 yr. ago working in a garage.

I forgot about that, my dad used to do the same thing. It's pretty cool to watch.

It's funny, but before even seeing this topic, I was wondering about Coke (not Pepsi) for cleaning atomisers too, based on that article from a book on how to clean things with Coke Joey Green's Wacky Uses which then did the rounds of the internet for years. My mother, in disbelief, tried it at the time on a really filthy toilet (as suggested in the article) and was so amazed to see the Coke really did do the job!

If anybody's worried about the "acid" in Coke being harmful to drink, it's not according to Snopes (the site for checking hoaxes) snopes.com: Coca-Cola Acids.

Brilliant work, Terraphon, and another brilliant video, thanks! Love the way you did it too :D

I'm not sure how well a week will work out. I'd be concerned about the acids eating through the insulation on the wires and corroding them to the point of uselessness.

I'd say try *ONE* for a week and some others for times varying between a couple of hours and a couple of days. Eventually we'll stumble on the right formula.

For your next video - more Genesis:

I Can't Dance Video by Genesis

I may use that song at some point :)

The problem with music is that youtube and google both block any video that uses a copyrighted song so I have to upload to dailymotion or some other service...

I wouldn't mind using "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" either ;)
