So I've been working on getting prices on central a/c, which was supposed to be relatively inexpensive as I had it prewired when the house was re-wired and had the hookups/coil installed when the furnace croaked (cause my hvac friend said it would save me money & then he moved to Dallas......) but I kept getting outrageous prices ???
So, I finally broke down yesterday and bought a portable (on wheellies!) a/c....
The thought of going back to work and my dog paying for my procrastination was working my last nerve, ha!
But the final straw broke last nite when talking to my neighbor (retired hvac dude) who called his buddy and said he'd do it for me............CHEAP
Isn't that the way it always goes...............

Let me know how the portable unit works out for you. I keep looking at those thinking one would be great for my needs, but I keep running into bad reviews on them.
I realize every manufacturer of any product has a certain level of defective units that gets out, so I take most of them with a grain of salt. But a recurring theme I keep seeing with these are "horror stories" of how often the bucket that catches all the water from humidity overflows / needs to be emptied.
One of the scariest wouldn't run 5 hours without needing emptied or it would overflow. So much for sleep. Others (less frequently seen) you couldn't get the bucket out without spilling 1/2 the contents. Some would complain about noise (rattling). I've also read these types tend to cool less than similarly rated window units.
It could be just me, I tend to only look at them on sale so I could be running into discontinued models with known issues or poor design. Even though I think one of them would be more suitable to my needs, somehow I've always managed to talk myself out of the purchase.

Trav- they make some that have another tube that sits with the exhaust hose misting the water extracted outside - no container to empty. I've also seen that they aren't as efficient as window units. None are energy star compliant.
Serious waves in my little pond -- the wife's oldest sister was airlifted to Milwaukee last night with a bleeder in her brain, she is having emergency neurosurgery today to deal with an enormous aneurysm, things are screwy right now, this is a new situation for me to deal with, not my strong suit.....
