fyi....DrOz said that they have ran studies & that "that" is a myth :glare: sure seems true tho

I dunno who Dr Oz is, but everything is a myth, and then not, and then is. Nobody really knows nuthin' anymore--except that in this case the average age of puberty is consistently falling across a statistically-significant span of time and there is no demonstrable change to explain it physiologically.

Just did a quick google on Dr Oz and it turns out he makes his living pushing processed foods, and has this to say about electronic cigarettes:

Electronic cigarettes are smokeless, battery-operated devices shaped like cigarettes. ... But e-cigarettes have been found to contain other carcinogens and toxic chemicals, such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze. ... And unlike other nicotine-replacement products—like the patch, the gum, or the lozenge—e-cigarettes are not FDA approved, and there's no way to know how much nicotine you're receiving. If you're trying to quit smoking, a better solution is to start by working with your primary care physician. Research has shown that you're more likely to succeed if you do so with doctor support.
From Dr. Oz Reviews Electronic Cigarettes - Oprah.com

While I doubt the lowering age of puberty could really be ascribed to any one or two things anyway, I find it hard to take doctors seriously who make their living in the media--and when those doctors unabashedly feed from the trough of the pharmacological industry I tend to discount their knee-jerk defense of it :)

Awww - she's a little young to comprehend what that's all about.....and it will have an impact on her - a friend of mine - her daughter started at 8 - she was so embarrassed at school - having to raise her hand for the more than usual trips to the bathroom - and the teacher had to be reminded numerous times about it.....:glare: - how many students do you think she had that needed extra bathroom privileges?

So far her questions have been "what age do girls usually start?" and "is this related to why my boobies started getting bigger?" and "what else is going to happen?" We are of the opinion that children are only as smart as adults let them be, so we've always answered her questions as honestly as we could--so in this case she was not freaked out, just surprised that it happened to her already.

As far as the bathroom privileges, luckily for us her teacher was very understanding. It seems that she, herself, started a bit early (when she was almost 10) and had to deal with a lot of the same issues, so she's helping "run interference" on Rhianna's embarrassment at school.

I've often wondered if the soy-based products (i.e. soy formula) have any bearing in this.......I am expecting my one granddaughter to hit puberty early - she had such reflux, and there are some food allergies in the family, the pediatrician kept her on soy based formula.....which is a "plant based estrogen" food source .....

From a familial standpoint - physical changes starting very early but not menses - but we didn't have exposure to the soy products...so we're expecting it.

Any other signs this was coming early for her?

Yep--there are all sorts of theories. In our case, though, soy has nothing to do with it. The only formula Rhianna had at all was as a last resort before hospitalization for about four days while she was also under a UV blanket for jaundice. Both the hospital and her pediatrician were avid proponents of breast-feeding and actively discouraged formula unless it was to address specific deficiencies. Perhaps a lack of dietary supplements contributed, but mama was on so many pre-natal and nursing mother vitamins that I doubt it :)

As for "early signs," she did start budding last year. She didn't get her training bra before many of her friends, but she's started filling it out sooner than anyone else. On the other hand, there has been no follicular development (according to her mother, I personally don't check) which is supposed to happen before menses from what mama has been able to find.

Well it's good she wasn't totally off-guard :)

The signs are a bit out of sequence - has her shape changed the past 6 months or so? Curve to the hip, slope of the shoulders, curve of the calf?

It's great it hasn't freaked her out but it's a pity that an 8 year old child has to deal with it.

Its a shame, it really is -- also makes you wonder how Americans got married at 15 2 centuries ago thinking how we ourselves were so frakkin' immature at that age.....

I think they grew up faster Rip......life was more difficult from a physical / health standpoint - and they didn't live long enough to change significantly enough to see that they made a mistake - not that they had options...and those marriages were usually arranged.

(yeah, I know, this is a serious discussion, and I know LR is going to call me slightly disturbing, but...)

I just couldn't help looking back and forth at your avi while reading that, Jazzy.

Well, maybe the signs weren't quite so out of sequence. Mama was talking to her today about changes that will be upcoming and when she mentioned growing some hair "down there," Rhianna said "I already have a couple." So evidently Mama is not as up-to-date on her daughter as she was suggesting she was. I don't know about any of that stuff because I took myself out of that equation as soon as the diapers came off and toilet-training was (at least mostly) finished. Way too many people shoving their noses into other people's business and crying "child abuse" to make themselves feel important for me to take a chance on something like that.

As for body shape, not really. Other than the early breast development (and both my sister and wife suffered from that), her body shape hasn't changed noticeably. On the other hand, she's been in that "a little extra chunky just before the growth spurt" phase for close to a year now and she would usually "fill out then shoot up" within a couple of months--so perhaps the metabolic energy that was being harnessed for the extra height was redirected internally and her next growth spurt is going to hit all the other points of puberty at once.

I sure hope not. She's handling the development itself very very well, but she is very embarassed to be the only girl she knows going through it right now. Not sure what it would do to her self image if she suddenly changed into a sixth grader in the middle of third grade

Oh hell no--I don't wonder at all. Those Americans also started working the farm (or factory) when they were 6. Somewhere between 8 and 12 they would already be apprenticed if they were going to be lucky enough to enter a trade.

Still being immature at 15 is a luxury of the modern age--a combination of having way too large of a population and having most physical labor handled by machines. My great grandmother once told me how happy she was when she turned 7 because that meant she was old enough to go work in the fields--and that meant she got to sleep a half-hour longer while the kids took care of gathering the eggs and milking the cows. When she turned 7 she didn't have to start working until the sun had come up...

And sometimes they were even "arranged" in advance... ;)

Most people don't seem to realize that the bride involved in a shotgun wedding was usually under 15...

Yes, early breast development is familial too - but I believe you only follow your mother. As for the "little chunky" part....yes that too.....my kids did that - chunk up then shoot up....unfortunately, now that she is menstruating the shoot up parts aren't going to be quite as much and if you aren't careful she could stay chunky. I'm talking a little more careful not dieting ;) and no self-conscious body-image either - she has enough on her plate

I changed the homework rules with my daughter - instead of after you get home from school and have a snack and then homework - it was get home, have a snack, go outside to play while it's still light out and homework after dinner - to get her activity level up - it would have worked had I known what she was snacking on when I was at work  as an adult she confessed as to what she had been eating :( - really poor choices. Since I had a teenage son in the house, I really had no clue who was eating so much. I presumed it was my son....

Well...it doesn't take much to get men bedeviled ......

As for chest hair - that comes later Rip.....most boys in high school don't have much, if any. Seems to be the last place you sprout it.
