My favourite spaced coil used to be a parallel 32g build of 4 wraps around a 5mm wick and it hit 1Ω every time.

They lasted about 2 weeks and then rather than cleaning coils and so on - i'd just make them anew. 32g is thin and cheap and hard to save when it's old. But aren't we all.

My adv now is a Clapton, just because the flavour is terrific.

Contact coils is hotter as they concentrate the heat and slightly faster ramp-up time. Spaced coils takes a little more wattage for the same heat, but gives imho better flavor.

Imagine lighting e.g. 5 matches at once with space in between; you'll get an even burn/heat over the area, whereas when lighting 5 matches right next to each other, you actually get more heat than before, but in a more narrow/concentrated area... This is why some feel contact coils burns there juice and/or scorches wick, and why spaced coils last longer before rewicking. Also why there's better flavor with spaced coils as the vaporization happens over a wider area of wick, although with less concentrated heat... Lastly, contact coils are often easier to rewick and reuse for longer time...

I personally use contact coils because I love very hot builds/short-draws and vape unflavored anyway...

Personal preference really, which you'll only get by experimentation ;)

Contact coil's are great for Taste and Throat-Hit, heres a good Thread all about it--> Tensioned Micro Coils. The next step.

I sometimes vape really hot builds and spacing the coil so that it covers more wick helps against dry hits, although enlarging the id of the coil will do the same thing i think you tend to lose a little flavour But it all depends on the atty used as well

I above ohm vape and sometimes compressing the coils makes it so tiny.

Likewise, I've found spaced coils work best for TC but break this rule using SS builds only. Recently I have discovered Clapton coils built to about 1.2 ohm give me the best all round results whether spaced or compressed. I just like the idea of better flavor and vapour from a higher ohm build and was initially surprised that I could make a coil with a core wrapped in high gauge wire that came out above 1 ohm. I use these in my kayfuns and other rta's to great effect.

Sorry I am not really answering your question as I suspect the any straight answer is somewhat elusive/subjective.

I have yet to do a spaced coil. Compressed seems to working just fine, but do want to try it anyways just for the experience.

All down to personal preference generally but in some applications (velocity style decks) where a spaced coil improves wicking and helps to fill the deck it can be useful and avoids having to build coils with more wraps thus keeping your intended resistance the same.
