So I'm now a few builds into my RBA journey and following various research sorties on youtube and elsewhere I've started compressing my coils. The latest build is 9 wraps, 2mm, 28awg which comes out at 1.35Ohms. Once mounted onto the deck of the atty, I went through the coil compression exercise - Heat up, stop firing, compress coil with tweezers. Did this several times until there was no more 'spring' in the coil, and all coils were touching one another. Checked that the coil was heating up in the middle and spreading outwards to the edges of the coil. Proceeded to wick and vape.....great results.

I'm curious though, as to the principle behind this methodolody. The 'why' as to the benefits over and above using a non-compressed coil. Is is a more even heat up, is it better at heating quickly. Could it be that the liquid within the wick right at the centre of the coil has a greater distance to travel out to the edges of the coil when heated, as opposed to through the coils if a non-compressed coil is used?

firstly you are using the range of ohms that greatly benefits from 'closed coil' or 'micro coil's', although 'micro's' are '1/16 id (inside diameter)' so a bit smaller then what you are using atm.. but no biggy, it still has the same sort of effect but not so intense... if you do a search for 'micro coils' you will find a thread started by a guy called 'SuperXdrifter' he is the brains behind it..

the 'closed coil's' intensify all the heat into a smaller area then an 'open coil' and you get the effect of using a lower ohm coil then what you are using

the current tries to take the shortest route through the coil so when you compress the coils together it treats it as one whole... making it heat from the center out.. like if you had just a single wire between your post's

if you want to get perfect tight wraps without having to compress heat your coil try this Tension wrapping micro coils - YouTube ... not that i need to do this

Great. Thanks!....just the info I was keen to learn. Will definitely have a look at the thread you mention, and youtube tutorial.

I'd already experienced the effect of compressing the coils vs non-compression with my latest build......and noted the great results, so it's another day with a little more learnt.

Aint vaping great.
