Every winter while smoking, I would catch a cold. Almost every time, while my body was busy fighting off the viral infection, a secondary bacterial infection would cause bronchitis and I'd cough until spring.

That doesn't happen any more.
Thank you Cowboy. I appreciate your response.

Hi Jamie & welcome
At 64 you should just do what you want to do and to heck with the rest of the world.:thumb:

Being only 63 I am still bound by society's rules and norms. Can't wait for the freedom of being 64. ;)
LOL Thank you very much. I have decided to take your advice and just do what I think is best for me.

@Jamie Plum - I didn't want to put a rather long post here, so I'm going to PM you with it instead. Hopefully, it'll give you even more encouragement to continue vaping and will also ease your mind about it even more. :)
Hi There,
I have no idea how to pm you back. But I want you to know how much I appreciate your taking the time to send me such an informative response. I do feel so much better about vaping after reading your response and many others. I believe it is the right thing for me to do and I feel great about it.
I have started with a 3 nicotine juice but find myself having 1 or 2 cigarettes a day. Do you think it would be wise to raise the nicotine level for now? If so, what level would you suggest? I need to get another mod also. The one I have makes me cough as it has no air flow control. I am not really sure why I cough sometimes when I puff it. I still have much to learn. But I will get there. Especially with all the wonderful advice I am getting from this site. Everyone has been so awesome. Thank you so very much for your information.

Hey Jamie,

You could try raising it a bit, but some dual use while transitioning is fairly normal. Going to two cigs a day is a fantastic start!

Some coughing is normal early on especially dual using, but if you are using a mod with high power outputs and high clouds, even 3 nicotine can be too much for one's throat, early on. When I quit, I started on a DL device (inhale like sucking through a straw, higher wattage) and my throat and lungs couldn't handle it. The coughing (I was using a DL device with 12 nic, way too high, got nic poisoning and it did subside when I lowered my nicotine some, but Dl was still very hard on my throat and lungs.

Since you have COPD, I would suggest a smaller, MTL device with adjustable wattage and airflow to see how you like it. MTL starter kits are pretty inexpensive and you can find tons of recommendations for that, or just start a thread to get recommendations. You can still save your other device for when you want more clouds, or if you enjoy the wide airflow.

In a MTL tank I vape at 15 mg nicotine but since the quantities of vapor is so different, I don't think I'm getting more nic than if I chain-vaped a DL high output delivery tank. I was able to transition then, and it will be useful to try different options to see what you like. Some people starting out have one lower nic device that they use all the time but a tank set up with more nicotine to vape through more of the intense cravings, so even if you prefer your current device, a MTL with more nic might end up being your go to device for cravings!

Best of luck, I can see you are really wanting to make it work, and you will. Things I used to help me besides vaping: Knitting (keeps my hands busy and thoughts off nic when I can't vape, etc.) taking up new hobbies (I'm learning the guitar as I got my voice back and I like to sing) and the support of this site. I got so much invaluable information and support and encouragement here, and I NEEDED that. Some folks don't, but I did, and it kept my thoughts focused on vaping when I wanted to smoke.

But two cigs in a day is HUGE, right? When's the last time you did that? :headbang:

Hi Anna
I can't even remember the last time I only had 2 cigarettes a day. So that is definitely progress. I am relieved to hear that it is normal to dual smoke in the beginning. I was feeling guilty about it. Thank you for the info on the mods and nicotine. It seems like I will need to do some experimenting before I find what is best for me. But you have given me the ground work. I appreciate it so much. Thank you again.

It is SO normal. Cigarettes are pesky buggers. I think if you find the right setup for you, it will be easier, and that may take some time. There is nothing to feel guilty about when dual using. Count the cigarettes you DON'T smoke, not the ones you do. :)

I had to do some more complicated stuff to completely quit analogues with my vape.... But I won't go into all that now, as I think more nic and finding your best device may work for you without additional things. I did NOT go to only one or two cigarettes when first starting vaping, it was more than that. I didn't feel guilty (well, actually, I guess I did... to an extent) but I did start feeling frustrated and like I wasn't going to be able to make it work, but it happened! My first day without a cigarette I almost fell over in surprise! I first encountered vaping in like 2005 or 6, so believe me the road to vape only (not dual use) was slow, and there were times I wasn't vaping at all.

I got some advice to Keep Vaping No Matter What, on this forum, and I did. If I craved a cigarette, I would vape BEFORE I smoked it, paying attention to how I *felt* when smoking it (usually, gross) then vape right afterwards, to remind myself that I was turning into a Vaper. Over time, I noticed they were grosser and grosser, and I wasn't getting anywhere near the satisfaction that I used to and that really helped me withstand some INTENSE cravings later on when I was vaping only (I do get them, they subside, and I haven't had to give in to one in over 2 months, so wow :) ).

I think you are going to do GREAT, and in part because you are coming here for help and support. I am totally rooting for you! Just vape as much as you can, work on your setup, and don't feel bad if you smoke the odd cigarette here and there. There are those magical unicorns who "turn off" the cig craving pretty easily and take up vaping and never smoke another cigarette, but I was not one of them. I was really addicted to the tar and alkaloids in cigarettes and a 2--3 ppd smoker, so I had some detox to go through and it wasn't fun.... But it passed more swiftly than I could have imagined.

Happy vaping! :)

So glad to see you here, Jamie! these people really know their stuff. Hope you will hang around with us.
Hi There
I sure will hang out. Soon as I am free of babysitting my grandson. His Mom's went out of town for 5 days so I am staying at their house getting him off to school and doing homework. But I am definitely going to join you all. I still have much to learn.
