I'm starting a new research project to try and determine statistically how reliable the average atty is. To map this out, I need you guys to post replies to this thread answering the following:

1. Out of the last 10 attys you bought, how many:
a. Gave you problems right off the bat? (This could be DOA, under performing, burnt taste, really anything that makes you think the atty wasn't 100%)
0
b. Gave you problems after a few days (3-4) (These are problems that cleaning doesn't help, or when you clean the problems return within a few hours of use)
0

2. Whats your atty type (510, 801, etc) - optional
510
LR 510 (mainly)
801
LR 306
808

3. If you can detect the manufacturer then provide this info. Please don't include the reseller though.
Joye mainly, but I have a few SLB, Bauway, and not sure

I would also like to note, MOST of mine are de-bridged and de-wicked, I clean them with mainly IA or water. I've been vaping for 3 mos and have YET to kill an atty

\m/ !! vape ON !! \m/

1a: 1
1b: 1
2: LR306, LR510, 510, M401, DSE901, Joye 302
3: Joye, Smoore (probably), SLB

The bad atties were a recent M401 model which performed a lot worse out of the packet than the older examples of the type I've had, and does not have a good taste (sort of dry, like it has a wicking problem), and a DSE901 which started performing poorly after a couple of days. I put it on a 5v mod and it burnt out after a few puffs.

All 10 would be KR808D1 "premiums", no clue on the manuf V4L uses.

None with problems right off the bat.

2 out of 10 with problems showing up within 5 to 10ml or so (days? weeks? don't know, just how many ml have gone into it) - troubled atties always appear to be over-stuffed with filler.

5 out of 10 last around 30 or 40 ml.

3 out of 10 last 60ml plus.

They never "fail", instead they begin to "burn" and ruin flavor, so burn=fail. And I almost never clean, I just refill with the same or matching flavors.

Experience has taught me that pre-filled KRs have a much higher fail rate than blanks, so I never buy pre-filled KRs anymore. Also, thicker and darker juices = fail much faster than clean clear juices.

Once I have around 100 replies, I'll do some calculations an publish the results and create a pie graph on a blog post for you guys.

Also to keep the stats accurate try not to answer unless you are pretty sure about the facts, and atties purchased or used in 2010/2011.

Thanks and happy vaping!

Thanks, I am interested in seeing the results!

Alright guys,

I'll post the results because I can see where this is going :) Overall I'm impressed by the gathered results. So heres the graph, it seems Atty reliability is completely acceptable. Ofc I think you guys will agree that sometimes you can just have bad luck.

I excluded some results from the calculation because I could not be sure if they were user error or not. But I tried to be as accurate as possible.

Exact figures:

Joye 510 (Reliable from start: 99.375%, Reliable after a few days: 99.685%)
808 (Reliable from start: 100%, Reliable after a few days: 98.473%)
All other data points to 100% reliability (obviously not true, but based on data).

I wouldn't take the data too seriously though, but if anything I took away 2 lessons;

1. If you're having reliability issues with your atties try switch suppliers.
2. Overall atties are pretty reliable!

I am so freaking bummed, because I have been using one 510 atomizer exclusively for the last (almost) 8 months.
I was trying to see if it would last forever with dry burns and proper care.

But on Thursday night, after watching the Chargers beat the hell out of San Francisco, I passed out on the couch.
And at some point I was laying on the button of my Chuck while it still had juice inside.
I woke up, and it was really, really hot.

So, yeah, I must have baked a bunch of juice into my atomizer mesh, and melted some plastic in the bargain.
It still works, but the whole thing tastes like burnt plastic and smoke.

I very, very reluctantly pitched it, and brought out one of my 20 backup new 510 atomizers.
I still figure I have enough to see me through until the end of time, or 2012, whichever comes first.

But yeah, I have to start my count on atomizer longevity all over again.
:(

I sympathize for ya DC2. Agnes Atty's been doing a fantastic job for me almost 4 months now. Her sister Alice Atty does the job when I need her to, its just not the same when Agnes isn't on the job. I was thinking this afternoon I'm gonna be REALLY sad when Agnes' work days are over. Hoping that Agnes keeps working long after most atties have retired. Oh, by the way, neither Agnes nor Alice have ever been dry burned when its time for their cleaning. They only enjoy a nice soak in alcohol on their day off and then an overnight rest. They work so hard when they're on duty that I just can't bring myself to make them go through a dry burn on their rest day.

a. Gave you problems right off the bat? (This could be DOA, under performing, burnt taste, really anything that makes you think the atty wasn't 100%) = 0

b. Gave you problems after a few days (3-4) (These are problems that cleaning doesn't help, or when you clean the problems return within a few hours of use) = 10 - almost all within 2 days

2. Whats your atty type (510, 801, etc) - optional= 510

3. If you can detect the manufacturer then provide this info. Please don't include the reseller though. = 5 Joye - 5 unknown
