It's a tricky subject and everyone will have opinions on what gunks up coils quickly for THEM. To me it is (in order) chain vaping, too high wattage, sweeteners, colorants, certain flavors, too high VG, temps rising in a tank, and well, the type of coils you are using and does the coil "match" the juice, IE higher VG capable coils are often sub0hm coils, they are designed to handle it. Also, what drop in coils you are using will make a rather large difference.

If it were me, I'd probably try my hand at rebuilding before jumping directly to unfavored, although I guess unflavored could give you a sense of how much or not flavorings and other additives affect your particular coils.

If you get an RTA setup, you will also have a backup and will also be able to rotate your setups during high chain vaping times.

You don't have a ton to lose, and a lot to gain if you find yourself liking rebuildable atomizers.

Best of luck,

Anna

Well, mine get pretty gunked up so I took the cotton out, then was pulsing it, then brushing it and it was still icky so I kept doing it until it was clear and then rewicked. The first one I fried -it broke. I think it is easier for me to just change them out because I have a bunch of coils that I premade and wicked and that are already attached to the rba --I have a few extras so it is just like changing a coil and then once every two weeks or so I make a bunch more.

It sounds like your going too long between rewicking and cleaning.

Before I quit vaping I was rewicking daily except for maybe once a week when I was being lazy..

You never want to wait too long - I can't imagine that breathing in vapor off a gunked up, nasty coil is good for you...

Some people rewick daily, others can go two or three days, still others can wait a week, it all depends on what your vaping and how so what you need to do is find out where that sweet spot is for you; that place your rewicking often enough for your vaping style and habits but not overly much..

You should be able to taste the difference in your vapor before it gets to the point your coils are uncleanable.... when the taste changes you'll like to rewick most usually.

I change coils every other day - sometimes every 2 days. I do not mind changing them out. As long as it tastes good...

I'm guilty of most all listed. I do have a back-up - same setup x 2 :). I don't mind changing them out
Good idea. I'd probably lose them. I do pre-cut wire...and I lose them. I save time by not pre-wrapping. I should pre-lose them
I got the idea from someone here to have extras and it works really well for me. I'm like pita organized and have them all assembled and tested. I even carry a spare with me --- just in case. I just ordered a few more. I have 10 but want to have 15. Fourteen in my toolkit and one to carry.

I have a little clear snap case that would be good to keep them in.

My coils lasted months... I built a new coil every three or four months out of sheer boredom - not because they were bad.

The only thing I did was rewick and clean the coil.

I vaped coil killers. Dark sweet juice and I was there, it was all I vaped.

Something is seriously wrong if your BUILDING a new coil every two days out of necessity. ..

Wish there were a wow button --- months! Wow. I'm not sure if anything is wrong. It's just that they get all icky and I change it out. One thing I have wondered about is that most times the cotton is just fine - just crud on the coil. I will try burning and rewicking again on one of the builds and see how long it lasts :).

All you do is pulse them, not too much, just enough to burn the gunk off, don't lay on the fire button heavy, just hit it on and off til it stops burning the stuff off, then you take a (wire cleaning) brush and brush it off clean. Running it under water first makes the coil shinier...

It's very simple and takes just a minute and saves your coil. Do it every time you need to rewick.

I have a "rebuild" snap top box that has wire, rayon wicking, tools, and all the things I need to service an atty. Most of you probably have something similar. I work next to the kitchen sink where the light is good.

I yank the old wick and turn on the kitchen sink tap to a low level. I pulse the coil to a dull red, dunk it under the water stream, and brush it with a finger. If it's not shiny and smooth at that point I get out the screwdriver and remove it.

The coil mandrel is in the box, so I cut a length, recoil, and wick. I screw the atty onto my 510 ohm meter and use that as a base for two hand work when I replace the coil. It only takes 5 minutes or less.

Wire is cheap at 100' for $6 on Amazon. When I get low I just order more. I love the vape from a new coil! I probably replace the coil once a month on my everyday Kayfun Lite and change the wick once a week.

To engage in a little bit of meta-commentary I'm a bit concerned about how quickly pro-forma disclaimers that arose around subjective measures (I like this and I don't like that, etc.) have moved into the objective realm.

Taste is subjective. I like this, you like that, we can agree to disagree.

Coil gunk is not as subjective. Some recipes will gunk coils more than others, and they will not bother to refer to people's opinions.

If a recipe gunks coils a little less quickly for you then it is because of a number of physical factors related to your setup, or your vaping habits. But let's not start pretending that the laws of nature are a matter of opinion.

Well, I think that's fair enough. I just meant that everyone will have thoughts on what gunks coils for them, based on what they're vaping/doing. Someone who chain vapes and later doesn't may see a difference and have an "opinion" that their coils gunk less if they rotate setups and/or start using temp control.

I do agree however, that there are "known" factors that can be addressed, it's just more likely for one person who has say, more experience with sweeter or darker juices to state it's a coil gunker for them and etc. I don't really mean (or mean to imply) that it's a matter of opinion. I cited mine in MY order, because that is the conclusion I have come to. However, yes, I totally agree that there is a collective set of "facts" concerning coils gunking quickly so in that you are absolutely correct. :)

Well, I apologize if my post seemed rude- I didn't mean it that way, but looking back on it I can see how it might be taken that way. I hope you know I hold you in very high esteem.

I am a bit concerned about tendency to soften things in order to avoid conflict.. I understand it, but I am not sure I like it. Managed conflict is a large part of what I do for a living, and it's the only thing I have found that reliably leads to truth.

A few years ago a client asked me to write a mobile app that depended on data provided from a backend his employees would provide. They were never able to provide it, so I wound up writing a simulation of what their back-end ought to do, just so I could work done. I delivered the app to the client, and said "good luck in your future endeavors."

A month or two later my client got in touch with me and offered me a ridiculous amount of money to get things done in a month. I wound up doing doing most of the work myself, because it was faster, but I did wind up managing his people to some degree.

I started to measure things, and I started to argue with them about their choices, on objective grounds. And I made them make their arguments on objective grounds. They might not have liked me very much, but we shipped a month after I came on, after many confused months of not shipping.

I got a beer with this client a while later and said "I guess I could have been nicer to your people." He said to me "Dude, you're a bull in a China shop." I said "But we shipped, right? That's what you paid me to do."

Truth is hard to find, and it's often uncomfortable when you find it. But you can never be sure of it if you do not have the opportunity to argue for it against bitter committed opponents.

Same here....I vape mostly nets, although very clean nets and my coils lasts months. I do however vape 7 different rta's through out the day and with that, I probably make a new coil every 4 months . After a quick dryburn, I just rewick and just don't see any reason to throw out a perfectly good coil.
