My doctor diagnosed my first exacerbation in November, 2011 and began referring to my COPD as emphysema. Antibiotics still haven't cleared up my bronchial infection, but because I "sounded better" to my doctor at the beginning of this month, he performed a spirometry. It indicated I had a FEV1 of 45% and a FEV1/FVC of 43%. I am frequently short of breath and since this exacerbation have quite a bit of phlegm, which I did not have before the exacerbation. My juice mixtures are now mostly VG dominant and I have been able to reduce my nicotine to 6 mg. I run two humidifiers in the house to loosen the mucous and drink lots of water. Today is my first appointment with a pulmonologist. I hope he doesn't want to give me another spirometry because my infection is still active and I will only be depressed if I haven't improved or gotten worse since the beginning of January. My primary physician didn't want to give me more antibiotics because I have been on so many since November and he doesn't want to create a super germ. Nonetheless, I hope this pulmo doc has a good antibiotic in his medical bag of tricks to clear up the infection. I read in another forum also that heavy VG can increase mucous or phlegm. That may be the case - I don't know. I was vaping 70 pg/30 vg for 8 months prior to my exacerbation.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, please. :)

I think you should check with your doctor regarding humidifier.Humidiers are bad news when you have a full blown lung infection.

I had the appointment with a pulmonologist and he, like my primary doctor, does not think I have a lung infection despite the mucus color, which to me, signifies an infection. He is basing his opinion on the fact that I don't have chills or a fever. He said the color is what it is. I'm not so sure. Anyway, because I have so much mucus, the humidifiers seem to help loosen it up so I can cough.

P.S.....My primary doctor said to "drink, drink, drink" and also to use the humidifiers. It is important that the mucus be loosened and expelled so a big (bigger) infection doesn't set in.
