Last Thursday people in my part of Ontario (The Toronto area) got the prepping bug. By the time I went out to do a bit of food shopping on Friday afternoon there was a buying frenzy. I looked at the amount of cars in the parking lots and only went into a Bulk Barn for some rice, pasta, dried fruit, nuts and beans. It seems folks were not thinking of Bulk Barn that day because they were not too busy :) . We are always reasonably stocked for those basics so my bill of $70 was enough to make me happy. I also got 3 large bags of nice frozen veggies and a couple loaves of good breads from my neighborhood Sobeys, which were the last they had, so we were good there too.

Over the weekend our grocery stores were pretty much sold out of frozen veggies, TP, paper towels, brick cheese, milk, eggs, bread, sanitizing products, and a few more few more basic items. Fresh vegetables and fruits were also sparse. Tonight I hit Sobeys on the way home from work and they were restocked with most things except brick cheese. Could be some more, but that was the only thing I looked for I couldn't find at a reasonable price.

I doubt we will have a problem getting food any time soon but I will keep us stocked for a few months anyway for items that keep well. The freezer also has at least two months worth of meat in it and protein can be had from other sources too. I think we will be able to get fresh food going forward so I'm not too worried about that.

The biggest risk I see right now is that we could be entering a serious world wide recession that could become similar to the Great Depression in scope. Hopefully it will not be as nasty. This pandemic is not likely to be over anytime soon and the economic repercussions are going to be huge.

I don't think of myself as any kind of doomsayer, but I do like to keep things in perspective.

News telling us to only store 1 week's worth.

and that is the right thing to do.
You know the story they tell at Business Schools about an old bank with a decent reputation and a lot of clients. When a new bank appeared in that town they decided to get rid of an old one and started to spread information that an old bank is about to go bankrupt. Some clients believed in it and went for their money. Most of the clients didn't believe in rumors but when they saw a first line, some of them also changed their mind. Soon, most of the clients were standing in a line to cash out everything they had. It ended up with a bankruptcy of an old bank. With no good reasons except the rumors.

Overstocking will lead to the same ending.

Fractional reserve banking is intrinsically a confidence game.

World banking system is one of the main evils of our civilization. One simple thing that an organization (privately owned company in some cases like Fed. Reserve in US) "printing" money and lending them with interest to the big banks. Big banks lend to smaller banks, to organizations, businesses, physical customers. Each time the % is growing, debts are growing and there is no way out of this loop hole.

Still waiting for the two items from fasttech, one has just been packaged and says in transit to airmail, the other has been in transit since the 3rd of March, no new tracking information, that's a long air journey,I ordered both over 5 weeks ago, I'll wait because as we all know this virus is crippling business's around the world.
I have received a reply to a ticket I put in regarding the package that's been in transit since the 3rd saying, very sorry ,we will try to find out if it's been lost in the post and if it has we will refund or send another one ,in so many words. So they are really trying to help out but they have a massive backlog of tickets, currently the waiting time for a reply is 5 days

Don't worry too much mate. I had a priority package that came from the US take 12 days to get to Australia, priority packages have always been delivered to me within 5 days previously.
Everything is definitely getting held up at the moment:)

I'll try to remember that parable when I'm oh-so-desperately waiting for the National Guard to issue my "rations" as my immune system takes a hit and makes me more susceptible to the 2020 plague.

But that's less likely to happen since I decided to take my rations early in the form of self-paid-for "overstock".

    Somewhere out there
I don't think I've seen this posted yet, apologies if it's a repeat.

    From a recent CNBC.com article.
They found that COVID-19 was detectable in aerosols for up to three hours, up to four hours on copper and up to 24 hours on cardboard. The new coronavirus can also last up to three days on plastic and stainless steel, the scientists concluded, adding the amount of the virus left on those surfaces decreases over time.
Coronavirus lives for hours in air particles and days on surfaces, new US study shows

Since I live in an apartment with no garage, maybe I will put incoming packages in the trunk of my car for 3 days before bringing them in.

I just ordered oatmeal, cereal, vitamin D, vitamin C from Amazon. I'm more eager for those to arrive than the remaining orders from China.
