Cotton and liquid usage

Up until now I've just been tinkering with cotton ball and rolled gauze wicking on my protanks finding the right amount and I hit paydirt a few weeks ago with the right amount for good wicking, no leaking/flooding and no need for flavor wicking. I just cleaned and re-wicked all my heads yesterday and am loving the bigger clouds and HUGE flavor boost(even my weak china liquid tastes worlds better). Funny thing is I've gone through 3 times the usual amount of liquid. I've been tracking my vaping with the evic features just to find my sweet spot for different juices and I've been right at 7-7.5 watts pretty regularly on a 2.2 ohm coil, my puff count really hasn't changed but by just a few puffs +/- each day. ANyone else that has switched to cotton notice going though a lot more liquid without vaping more?

Hell I started a fresh tank just as I started typing this and am already 1/4 through it at 10 puffs where on the stock silica I'd be at about 25 puffs. NO leaking or flooding even without flavor wicking so it's not wasted liquid. I do know from my own wick testing that cotton ball wicks ~4 times faster than silica, rolled gauze(poly blend) ~3 times faster, peaches n cream ~2 times faster but I never expected to jump from 2-3 ml/day to 6-8 ml/day vaping virtually the same amount at the same settings. Keep in mind that these are stock coils just re-wicked. I have a few micro coil builds I have yet to try and based on this jump I'm expecting the micro's to atomize about 30% more than the just a re-wick given the ~30% more wick-coil contact area (28g kan 12 wrap 5/64ths 1.7 ohm builds vs stock 6 wrap 32g 2.2 ohm running the same settings).

I'm beginning to see how the RBA/RTA users can vape 30 ML/day easily now

I agree with john, the cotton and micro coils just wick better which make better vape and uses little more juice. I run a russian clone on my evic at 7.6 (rvw program from myvapor tweeked, starts at 7.6 goes down to 5 after few seconds) and 1.8 coil. I haven't seen my amount go up just the joy factor increase.

Your observations are interesting. I never thought to even try to analyze it...I just knew that cotton wicked better and tasted better than silica right off the bat. For my RDA's I am using cotton balls, and for my Protank 2's Peaches & Cream. The PT heads I re-wick at each fill. Now after about a month or two, I can't stand the taste of a silica wicked coil...

Switched to cotton a week ago. Beter taste, better vaper, bit I'm using about 25% more liquid. It's a tradeoff.

The only way to get more flavor and vapor is to burn more juice per second. The better the wick, the more juice you can get to the coil, the hotter you can run the coil and the more vapor you make. As others have said, it's a trade off.

i find with cotton wicks the first soaking is also reason behind juice consumption going up. try rewicking and soaking the cotton via dripping then fill tank. you may find a part of your observation is simply from new cotton soaking up juice. i find it takes a few drops every few seconds for a few minutes to saturate then i go thur my time marginally faster. you could also try a comparison with drippin that way you know for certain which factor is using the most. new cotton wick vs vaping after it is ready to go. after a rewick i add juice to my deck till it no longer absorbs usually takes 5 mins worth of juicing. add drops sit wait and repeat till the level no longer drops. then vape and add when needed. when i drip. when i tank i use the same approach add a few drops to the coil base wait repeat till it no longer wicks any more then fill tank and begin vaping.

Priming is an ingrained habit now since I have used Kangers from the start. Takes 3-4 drops to prime the silica and almost 8 to saturate my cotton builds. I figured more juice would be used just not that much. Going to have to re-evaluate my juice stocking habit ;D

For priming rebuilds, I keep a small bottle of plain VG to drip. I'm going to get funky taste from the kanthal and wick anyway so might as well vape something cheap. When I start tasting flavor I know the vg is gone. I do the same thing on an RDA between flavors.
