just because someone makes a patent doesnt mean the design works well. there are several wicking materials that are not cotton. stainless steel mesh and silica fiber come to mind. as for the bare coil in a juice bath thing it harkens back to the old old days of 2001. the issue with a device like this is spitting. SERIOUS spitting. If they've got that bit licked they might have something, though i doubt the patent is enforcable.

The Joyetech Riftcore still needs a wick to work. That picture is just illustrating how the heating elements work.
Sorry, guess I should have done a little more research before I posted that. That must work similar to my IGVI MVC, then.

I have an old vaporesso tank that uses ceramic instead of cotton, there are others that used and still use ceramics.
You can easily find mesh RDAs and RTAs (using a metal mesh as a wick)
People used to use silica as a wick, but I don't know if many people still use it...
Hemp is also used a lot for wicks.
Rayon is yet another very, very popular wick.

So yeah, cotton is not the only thing being used as a wick.

If you're dripping on an RDA with exotic coils, you might not even need a wick! (the coil being the wick)

The problem with the system that is patented is that you're going to get gunk and the performance of the device will quickly go bad. It's always better to have some kind of wicking material, no matter what it's made of.
I also don't know what "filter" he's talking about, but if the vapor would be filtered, it will be a pretty tasteless experience.

Some people have respiratory issues with porous ceramic being used as a wick, and I doubt it's healthy for anybody to breathe in ceramic particles; but some say the flavor from a ceramic wick is better than from cotton (ceramic as a heating element is not porous and is less likely to release too many particles). I don't think it's practical to use an exotic coil as a wick, you'd need to drip pretty much after every single puff, and a lot of liquid would fall off the coil before being wicked. Otherwise, it's a solid list.

I really like the concept of the Riftcore and may have to buy one. I'll let other people buy it first and review it before I take the plunge though.

There is a wickless vaporizer out now - I know not if it's any good (it's on Pre-Order, projected to arrive June 20th):

Authentic Usonicig Rhythm UltraSonic E-Cig Silver 1500mAh Starter Kit

Edit: oops! I see @untar already posted this device. I thought it was wickless though.

In my opinion, the future of e-cig technology lies in the development of two things:

    • A safer, more powerful, longer lasting battery other than Li-ion.
    • The invention of a superior wick material other than cotton, cellucotton, ceramic, silica, hemp, or stainless steel mesh.

There are lots of options for wicking that aren't cotton, (I use rayon for example) but for many coils, cotton is what is used, certainly for very many drop in coils, etc.

I don't understand enough about that patent or some of those newer vapes, but I do hope innovation can continue and etc.

Could we vape water if cotton free is possible?
Water doesn't conduct electricity if it is pure, and distilled water is used sometimes to create base liquid (usually at 5-10%), and it apparently helps reduce the amount of harmful chemicals produced at high temperatures when vaporizing VG/PG. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use water, but no idea what the experience is going to be like.

The only good metal wicked tanks I know of are the Genesis style ones using stainless steel mesh. Here's a video of someone setting one up. I vaped one of these for most of a year back in 2013. The flavor is very clean and the wicks last a long time with proper maintenance. Most people don't mess with them these days because of the learning curve required to learn the technology and the occasional shorts that will happen in use.

I know of no other good non-cotton/Rayon/hemp systems out there.
