I recently bought a couple of evod and t3s clearomizers. I quickly realized they are the extremely simple to rewick with cotton. I'm going to try a microcoil once my kanthal gets here.
I'm wondering how much better a rebuildable will be than what I can get out of this. itll run fine up to 13 watt with the stock coil and cotton. I'm considering just getting a protank but i'm wondering if a good rebuildable will perform even better?

I have to say that I have a kayfun lite plus and protanks and I think my rebuildable protanks with microcoils and cotton are just as good or if not better than my kayfun, again this is just my opinion and Im sure there will be many people to agree and disagree with me. I use 30 gauge kanthal and get about a 1.5 -1.7 ohm coils with cotton and the taste and vapor production are amazing.

thanks for the input guys.

The biggest thing that has me leaning towards the protank is the easy to swap out coils. It seems to me that its easier to carry a spare coil when im out and about than spare cotton and kanthal. if I popped/burnt a coil, it would be much more convenient to just twist on a fresh rebuild than have to sit there and wind one up

edit: the vapor I get out of this t3s is pretty crazy. at 9.5watt it puts out more vapor than my phoenix clone rda. That thing collects dust now.

Ha! Finally, some folks that agree with me! I run Protanks (v2) on mechanicals with .9 ohm microcoils and cotton. They work absolutely great. I have a kayfun, aqua, several RDAs and RBAs. I STILL run Protanks. That said, I DID drill out the airholes in the bases to get better airflow. BUT, I have my eye on some Aerotank bases, which would negate those airholes.

Would not begin to try comparing my Protanks to any of my RBA's. Still, a good wick build in a Protank can give a solid vape in a convenient package. Don't think I'd push for 13w though. They are a bit small and air flow may be to weak for a smooth vape.

Maybe I'll do a couple of PT coils in cotton/micro on my next long stretch off. Hard to put the RBA's down long enough to get that into them.

It's fine if they work for you. My own personal experiences with recoiling evod heads have not been positive. I know HOW to recoil heads as I've done it on tons of vivi novas. But with the evods the grommets tear too easily. This is why I stick with rebuildables. They're meant to be rebuilt & I prefer this reliability to that of worrying about rubber grommets. But as I said, if it works for you then enjoy yourself.

Just be careful with them because the grommets DO fail & if one fails while you're using it you may short out your atty. That actually did happen to me once with a a recoiled evod. I rebuilt it, tested the ohms, fired it on an ego to make sure it fired good & then fired it on a mech. The grommet was torn & it failed on the mech & my fire button got flaming hot. NOT a good experience & not one I want to have again.

That's pretty much all I have say about that.

My Kayfun Lite Plus out performs my rebuilt micro coil and cotton Protank heads all day, every day. While my rebuilt Protank 2 outperforms the stock heads, there is no comparison with my KFL+ built to 1.2 Ohms with a micro coil and cotton. I'm not being a snob, but the flavor is 4 times better out of my Kayfun. Yes, it is more expensive, but it was the best money I've spent yet in my vaping journey.

I think a Protank is one of those things where it's cheap, but if you know how to finesse it, it will perform as well as something that costs much more. i.e., most chefs aren't using a $150 Wusthof knife to do their work. They're using some off-brand restaurant supply thing, and they know how to make it sing. While the Wusthof is a great product, and will last a lifetime, the restaurant supply jobby can be used like a workhorse, and if kept well tuned, can perform as well as the Wusthof in any situation. It's also completely affordable, and disposable, so when it comes to the end of its useful life, it can be replaced by the same product, which will work just as well as the original.

That said, I have a hand picked set of Wusthof and other high-dollar brand knives that I use daily. But, I'm not a chef. I just like to cook. If I cooked all day, everyday, as my vocation, I'd definitely use something like a Victorinox Fibrox knife for my driving, and leave the Wusthof at home. That's how I look at my vape devices. I vape all day, everyday, so I use devices that I know how to get the most out of, that are affordable and replaceable - ones that I know how to make perform as well as a Wusthof calibre device, but can be replaced quickly and affordably. I don't have a Wusthof calibre vape device yet, but I'll get one eventually. I'll leave it at home so I don't strip the threads.

Protank insulators will melt at high wattage. I found this out the hard way. I gave my two Kanger PT2s away, kept my Kayfun 3.1 clone and nimbus clones. I would use the Kangers if that was all I had... but given a choice I would take a Kayfun or a solid RDA any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
how high is high wattage? Is 13 watt safe?

I don't know if 13 watts is safe... I just did an experiment at 1 ohm (17.64 watts) to see how it vaped. Lesson learned hahaha... my PT2s seemed to work pretty decently at 1.5 ohms or higher (11.76 watts or lower), so if I ever use them again that is what I will build to. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Insulators will definitely melt while oxidizing too. I am a big fan of the Taifun GT as well. Both the Kayfun and Taifun give more options for builds but a quality build on any of them will produce a quality vape

no that's all very helpful. I like it at 9-12 watts, so 11.75 seems about right. I say 13watt because once I pass that it starts burning pretty bad

I find that protanks have trouble supplying air to hungry microcoils. I did a .6 dual side by side microcoilcoil in my protank and I tasted burnt right from the get go. 1.0 ohms dual coil works a lot better but the 1.6 dual works the best. I was just tinkering around with the dual coils but my sweetspot is just a regular 2.0 32 guage kanthal coil. I did drill out one of the bases a bit but it helped some but IMO still not enough airflow comming into the protank for serious subohm vaping. I have already toasted a couple insulators with my dual microcoil adventure, so having spare insulators inhand would be a good idea.
