Just switched out the wicks in my protanks for cotton ones, man this is how vaping should be. Im getting more flavor and vapor and the best part is, you can chain vape the hell out of it. I dont seem to be able to chain vape that silica too well. Wanted to share this because if your thinking of doing it just do it you might like it.

I rebuild all of my Protank heads with micro coils and cotton wick. I use organic cotton and boil it. You don't HAVE to boil it, but I feel that it really improved the flavor. And remember to only use a small amount of cotton through the coil. Just pull it through until there is a little resistance. Cotton expands like CRAZY and if you use too much, it will not wick enough juice to the coil (you are choking it). And usually a teeny-tiny wick on top works well to prevent flooding and leaking.

Started doing this a while back. I don't change out the silica until it gets gummed up but yeah remove the silica and dry burn the coil. I use cotton balls. The first time I did it I took the cotton of of a Q-tip. Pull it out into a strrand, you will use a lot less than you think. Roll the end between your fingers to make it a small point. If you have a little fiber hanging off the end fold that back onto the point and roll it in. That little fiber will prevent t from going in. Pull the cotton through, drop a little juice on it and lay a small piece on top for flavor wick. Replace the stem and trim to length. Reassemble the tank and your good to go. Do not dry burn even a little. The taste is HORRIBLE! Greatest thing about it is one package of cotton or cotton balls is going to last a long time. In a month I have re-wicked about 20 coils. I think I've used 2 cotton balls and I wasted half of it. The first couple you might use too much. It won't wick very well. then you'll go the other way and use too little. It's going to gurgle. You'll find your method pretty quick. Flavor does seem to be better.

I bought a bag full of cotton balls at Walgreen's yesterday. When I got home, I took apart my 5 non-vapor producing EVOD & Protank heads and tried the dry burn procedure on one of them as described in this forum. It worked but the funky taste left behind was too much to deal with so I pulled the silica all out and replaced it with a cotton twist. I also spaced out the coil wraps more evenly & put a little bit of snipped off cotton over the coil to replace the silica "flavor" wicks. I primed the coil with my testing liquid--raspberry--and added another 20 drops or so to the tank before assembling it all back together. Wow! The vapor production & flavor increase is incredible. Out of the 5 heads, 1 had a broken wire but I'm not into making my own coils yet--baby steps--so I put all the pieces into a pill bottle for now. I did add the remaining 4 successful cotton wicked heads to my rotation and am vaping on one of them now.

And I discovered that a round wooden toothpick is the exact size of the OEM coil wraps and will be a good way to practice wrapping my own.

I made the mistake of using a bamboo skewer once. I couldn't get the coil off the skewer so I destroyed it trying. Now I use the solid end of a 1/16th inch drill bit and it works perfect every time. It only took two tries before I made a workable coil. It's a piece of cake when you do it. After you get the coil made and mounted have a pair of tweezers handy and dry burn it without any wick. Release the firing button and immediately squeeze the coils together with the tweezers to get them as close as possible to each other. THen add your wick and reassemble the tank.

I decided to make a video on it because im so happy with it and i just want to help out others that use Protanks.

Im not sharing my link or anything trying to promote myself either because trust me im not a big you tube person or anything i just make videos for fun and to share what ive learned.

The instructions arent super clear or anything but i tried to do the best i could. (Im not very good at making videos) Just make sure you put a drop or two of juice on top of the wick after you insert the cotton.
If you just want to see how much better the vapor production is too i show that as well.

Oh yeah and this is mainly for new vapors or anyone that wants better performance from a protank so dont be too hard on me or anything if you think its low level stuff.

Way to put your self out there:) I like how simple you made that look.

I guess it's time for me to get over my fear of cotton. I was trying out cotton wicks for this cheap chinese RBA once, and I got a dry hit at one point. It tasted so horrible that ever since then I've cringed just thinking about using cotton again. Watching VaporClouds' video, it sure looks like wicking (and dry hits) won't be a problem.

I recently built my first micro-coils and used organic cotton. I have no comparison with other wicking material used in a DIY rebuild, but I can tell you the flavor way better than it was with the original coil and wicks. I had no idea what I was missing. I can also vape higher watts that caused a burning flavor with the manufacturer's original coil and wick.

wraps with 32 guage kanthal gives me a 1.9-2.1 ohm coil. If you go with a 30 guage it takes about 7 If I remember correct. You can also use a 5/64 drill bit to increase resistance a little as the wire is then a little longer but the coil will not be noticeably larger.

Thank you for the info. I was thinking along those lines and i have ordered 32ga wire. Im hesitant on the cotton wick but am going to give it a run.

Rewicking my Protanks with cotton has made them perform much better than I ever, ever dreamed they would. Flavour and vapor increase, automatically. With how easy it is to replace the wicks, how cost effective it is, it is a perfect solution.

If you're on the fence about it because you can't/won't rebuild your coils - never fear, you too can use cotton. Just slide the silica wick out of the coil with a pair of tweezers, and insert a piece of rolled cotton in (not forgetting to prime it with juice before re-inserting into the tank).

Simples.

My question is, everybody says cotton is so much better for wicking, and I will definitely agree, then why hasnt Kanger started making cottoon wick coil heads instead of Silica? It would be great to not have to pull the silica out and then try to barely squeeze cotton between the coils? Cant Kanger do this for me? I would appreciate it :) :)
