I usually boil my wick material just to be safe. Unless you get 100% organic, natural colored cotton.
The white cotton is usually turned white with hydrogen peroxide or some other bleaching agent. Who knows what they use to make it easier to process in a factory.

I boil a large batch at a time, changing the water twice. So I boil it for ~10min twice, then wring out excess water and hang it on a string to dry overnight. Once dry I put it in ziplock bags.

I use yarn, and don't bother to boil it. Never had any isssshuuueesss other than, uh, can't rememmmmmbeerrrr.....

My thinking is that, first, I'm lazy.

Second, the tiny amount of yarn / cotton used in a wick can't have any appreciable amount of contaminent.

Third - especially with cotton balls or swabs, they're made for cosmetic / health uses, so are probably pretty clean to start with.

Fourth, I'm lazy.
