I have no scientific data to support my conclusion, but I strongly believe that cotton is a much better wick material than silica. To me, it allows e-liquid to "flow" into the coil area better than silica.

That, combined with the higher power levels I can comfortably run at with cotton leads to more juice consumption.

Hi everyone,
I have started to use cotton as a wick. I am currently using a Kanga Protank Mini 2 with fixed voltage battery. I dry burned the coil and replaced the wick with cotton. I am not using any flavour wicks. It works great, but it uses a lot of e-liquid. Does anyone else notice this?
How much are you vaping? I ask because while cotton does absorb liquid better if you aren't vaping alot and your juice is dissapearing quickly you could have 1 of 2 problems I know of. 1 you could have a slow leak in your tank. 2 You could have too much cotton in it and it is absorbing more than it needs to wick to the coil essentially leaving a permanent pocket of juice that doesn't get vaped. Just my thoughts on the matter.

That's a good point. Most often when it comes to cotton wicks, less actually is more.

I get your point but the small coil can only hold so much cotton.

When I first tried cotton many moons ago, I did a very unscientific experiment.

I took some 2mm silica and a 2mm section of cotton and dipped them into some liquid to see which wicked the best. The silica took a few seconds to become saturated while the cotton was saturated almost as soon as it touched the juice - really quick vertical wicking :D

I use compressed cotton pads for my wicks, easy to work with because I just cut a piece to the width I need. Pinched them from the Wife, their a 100% cotton, unbleached, untreated make up removal pad - no boiling needed.

Thanks everyone. Wouldn't say I am vaping more than before; I am not noticing any leaking. I used enough to fit through the coil. It was snug but could be moved around.

There is much more vapour production compared to the standard wicking it came with,
Well if you are getting alot more vapor that kind of solves the more juice being used mystery lol. More vapor=more juice. If you have no leaks didn't over stuff it, and are getting lots of vapor I would say that is pretty normal.

When I replaced my burnt flavor wicks with cotton, after dry burning, I did notice a better taste -- sometimes. But sometimes, really nasty dry hits. The only way I've found to prevent that is to take a couple of "priming" hits -- without pressing the fire button. But I grow very tired of having to do that, when I really want a hit. So I've ordered some silica wick.

It seems to me that the original silica flavor wicks that come in the coils last longer without giving a bad taste; up till the coil needs dry-burning, in fact. With a cotton flavor wick, JUST as soon as that cotton is even slightly browned, it tastes nasty and burnt.

Anyone else have this, and/or know to get around it?

CVS sells jumbo organic cotton balls that unroll very easily and are pretty user friendly for wicking.
Same thing I use. Boiled one just because and haven't opened the bag in like 2 weeks. Really think it will last forever, and I'm wasteful with it. Also, I re-wick the wife's atomizers every 3 or 4 days (she likes the chocolate and coffee juices, which she thinks burns them up fast). Oops, just looked and they are only triple size. Still shouldn't run out til 2020 or so...

Cotton is bleached with hyd peroxide to remove bugs. Boiling removes it. I also get a browning & a burnt taste. Especially at sub ohm levals (.7). Excowool much better yet hard to get in popular sizes..

Well, I don't do sub-ohm and have no plans to ever do it, however I run my vv3 pretty hot, for the throat hit, and it goes thru the coils pretty fast, but it browns the cotton flavor wicks even faster, MUCH faster, than it does to the silica flavor wicks. Everytime I get a bad taste and open up a coil with a cotton wick, sure enough, it's brown -- not burnt, not black, just slightly browned is enough to make it taste really nasty.

I've never gone for the "organic" hype for *anything*, not climbing on that bandwagon just for cotton in my PV. All it means is that no petrochemicals were used for fertilizer or pesticide; as far as taste, even of FOOD, it means nothing at all. Just hype, to get more money; any perceived difference is in the mind of the consumer.
