I found a big spool of butcher's twine in the pantry. It's pretty thick cotton string, maybe 4 millimeters in diameter, made up from a bunch of smaller strands twisted together. I boiled it for a while and dried it, made a coil by wrapping 32 gauge Kanthal around a 4-40 machine screw, then pulled a couple of strands out of the twine to make the diameter just right, these extra strands are used as flavor wicks. Worst part is threading the wick through the coil, but I kind of screw it through. It's a little funky tasting for a few minutes, then perfect. I've got enough of that twine to make eleventy million wicks for my Protanks.

I've been a butchers twine evangelist lately. IMHO, it puts the yarn to shame. I don't bother boiling it, since it's meant to use with food it shouldn't have any coating or adjunct ingredients.

I know you said cotten but why not just buy wick? i just ordered this today https://www.vapingxtreme.com/Wick.html

I have to replace my wick on my cE5 soon as i figure out the right way to do it

Because q-tips are safe if 100% cotton to not boil and pull off and make 1 wick per side if on a protank/puritank, I have a box with 650 q-tips for around the same price that is 1300 wicks.

Read that someone on here called the makers of q-tips on the process in making them and the only thing used on them is the adhesive on the stick to hold the cotton on it so just grab the tip firmly and pull the cotton off, bam a new wick.

NOTE: this is only q-tip brand 100% cotton (q-tips).

I am loving how much ingenuity people have when it comes to vaping!!!! Would of never though about cotton balls or cheese cloth!!!!

That's what a forrum is all about -- a collection of thoughts, ideas, and anything that matters or doesn't matter.

And cotton wicks. Yes, born in need to find an alternate solution to possible health issues associated with the "legacy" wicking system. There is a big discussion here in ECF on possible enhalation of silica fibers breaking off from a dry silica wick and the enhalation of the carcinogen chromium oxide at CR(VI) level from a highly oxidized SS mesh wick.

It took me almost a month of reading to absob what it is all about. In short, if we have to compare it with cigarettes, the legacy system is still way much safer.

.. but if a cheap ball of cotton works and safer, say "why not"?

i jumped the cotton wagon, like it better than my silica wicks! and its easy to replace on my "Poop in the diaper" build (cotton under the coils)

Hello fellow vapers.
I have 90 days free from analogs that I was making myself for .90 cents a pack. Smoking 3 packs a day for me wasn't expensive , just costly on my lungs.
Started with stock C3, C4 cartomizers ontop of a 650 mah battery. Through the weeks of learning all about great vaping, coil rebuilding was a must. Of course silica wicking is the standard but I used cotton ball, cotton yarn ( boiled ) and cheesecloth. Cheesecloth rolled to about 3mm wick size and used in my protanks & mt3's were my favorites for the last 30 days. ( Love the bottom wicking tanks )
But the last few days I've been experiencing an annoying hack like something needs to be cleared from my throat. I switched over to a new / stock MT3 tank and within a day my throat cleared up.
The cotton cheesecloth gives a much bigger vape cloud than the silica wick, and when I first started using the cheesecloth I was getting much more taste. Now it seems the silica is getting great flavor, but still only a nice vape cloud.
NOTE: The next day I switched out to a rebuilt cotton coil, only to feel my throat loading up again with that hard to clear out hack.
I will have to do more in depth studying with different e-juices to see if it's something else besides the cotton cheesecloth that's aggravating my throat.
On a much larger note : My barking cough from 3 packs a day was gone on day 5 of vaping .
To all my unknown friends, VAPE-ON

Wicks are, supposed to be, just wicks.

Flavor shouldn't be altered by wicks! But we all know it does get altered when changing wicks.

With a VV/VW device, it's easy to get that flavor back by dialing the voltage or wattage, keep playing with the settings until that sweet spot is found.

So, my guess is e-liquid flavors behave differently at different heat levels and the heatsinking effect of the wick (soaking power) alters the burn rate of the same coil, thus the power adjustments above? Dunno, not sure, but my VV/VW gear does it for me.

So all, try it and let us know what you find.

PS: Don't let a cotton wick dry or you get a real throat "hit" of a burning cotton. Hurts more than a silica, more or less like a real harsh dry hit of a genesis wick :)
