Hi ECF, I've read a few threads and seen videos of people using Peaches N Cream Cotton yarn.
I bought some the other day, boiled it for 30 minutes, let it completely dry, but when I have it all set up it tastes funky.
Do I need to boil again?

Also wondering if it might have to do with using less loops. I have 6 loops pulled through a 1/8th drill bit for the yarn setup.

I regularly use cotton balls + microcoil setup, and when I compare the flavor side by side with the yarn and balls (exact same e liquid) the yarn setup tastes wierd. It's not the wick burning, nor harshness, just unpleasant mix of flavor.

Wondering if you guys have had similar experiences or any tips with this yarn. I bought the whitest one. ( I couldn't find the beige / off white - one).

I haven't used it myself, but boiling again is a good idea. I usually boil my cotton 3-4 times, changing water each time. I use sterile cotton balls and still do this..."sterile" doesn't mean "chemical free." On my first pour, I can see the hydrogen peroxide color coming out. Even the second pour has some residual coloring. Usually it looks pretty pure by the 3rd or 4th pour.

Good luck!

I have used 6 strands in a 1/8" coil before, its pretty much perfect. If I remember right that was when replicating vapehappys sleeper build.

I have never boiled the yarn before, it could well be the reason for the funky taste. If you get your hands on "ekru" yarn, it is all natural, non dyed, and should not require boiling.

More likely though, is if your doing a super sub ohm build like the one vapehappy did, then the funky taste is simply due to the ridiculous wattage your pumping through the coil. With these kinds of very low resistance builds, I tend to use very mild flavored juice. If I have a juice that I really like and want to use for dripping, I tend to dilute it with VG.

I use it all the time in a 1.9ohm microcoil, 30 gauge kanthal on an 18 gauge needle. I can only get 2 strands through the coil, and leave only a little excess on either end. Even though I did boil it (just for 20 mins or so) it tastes the same to me as cotton balls - no taste at all! It does look as if you have a lot of cotton there!

I dont know what it is but I hate cotton. the draw, the taste, everyhting is just off for me. tried cotton balls, cotton yarn, boiled it, washed it, etc. I even had 3 other people build the coil for me, and all 3 had identical results. no burning cotton or anything, but just a weird taste and draw.

silica works for me, never had a issue. probably will try ekowool too

I really do want to try mesh/rope too

I've used cotton balls, boiled cotton candle wick, and cotton yarn in that order because of what was available to me. I don't boil my P&C yarn but have found it's the best tasting cotton I've used so far. Never had a funny taste from it unless I was vaping a funky juice.

I hope you can figure the issue out. In my opinion at least, cotton yarn should have no flavor besides that of my yummy ejuice!

After boiling my cotton I bake it on a cookie sheet in the toaster oven at keep warm temp to FULLY dry it. Before boiling it, I noticed a slightly weird taste. After boiling it, and drying it well. It was great. I didn't use sterile, or organic, or anything special. Just 100% pure cotton for like $3 from the Wally.

I wonder if maybe some people don't dry it completely and what you're getting is actually mold...

I only boiled it in one batch of water and tamped them out a bit. Then baked. Probably boiled for 20 min. Shallow dish adding a little water as it evaporated, just enough water to cover them. Baked about an hour. Or until I could gently open one and even the very center was bone dry.

Then they went into zip lock bags.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Update: I put away the cotton yarn for 2 weeks and decided to give it another shot tonight with Sugar N Cream Ecru 100% cotton yarn (unbleached & not dyed).

Putting info below of my experience tonight in case someone else interested in using cotton yarn is having similar problems.

1st attempt
Setup: Standard Dual Coil wrapped around 1/8th drill bit 6 strands (3 loops) threaded through. (yes attempting to copy sleeper build)

Ohms: .5

Boiled?: Yes. Twice in 20 minute intervals and rinsed using tap water throughout the process. (From more reading I guess I'm supposed to be using distilled?). I Let it dry overnight. Yarn smelled funny compared to yarn straight off the spool, similar with all my previous attempts with boiling.

Vapor Production: Coils firing weak/delayed and kept popping although not as slow as on the VV setup posted on 1st page. Swear the wick is choked in this setup (atleast for me it is, I can't copy the sleeper build).

Taste?: Got that funny taste again, and pretty sure I've pinpointed it. That wierd/funny taste is very similar to the weird smell I was getting from the yarn post-boiling. Not sure if it's b/c the yarn sank to the bottom of the pot during boiling?

2nd attempt (Success):vapor:

Setup: Standard Dual Coil wrapped around 3/32 drill bit 3 strands (1 loop 1 strand) threaded through. Definitely not as choked as the 6 strands through 1/8 drill bit. Found 1 loop threaded to be too loose, that extra strand seemed like a nice snug fit.

Ohms: .4

Boiled?: Nope.

Vapor Production: Dense Plumes.

Taste?: Current flavor tastes like it should. I still think nano or micro-coil with organic cotton balls still marginally wins in flavor (personal preference). But I DO have to mention how I get more drags with yarn + standard coil without a hint of the wick getting dry. Some nano coil setups in the lower ohm range tend to dry out my cotton ball wicks a lil too quick.

They sell organic cotton yarn.. I have now let my knitter show:laugh: It is more expensive than sugar and cream but less chemicals to fight. I use sugar and cream all the time to knit spa cloths, but if I was doing what you are doing I think I would spring for organic. You would probably have to find a local yarn shop or order online. I've never done what you are doing so this is all I can say. That and they sell organic cotton balls at Whole Foods market.

Just tried my first rebuild of a Protank coil using a cotton ball, and noticed a funny taste. Which led me here looking for info. Didn't even think about boiling the cotton. In any case, half an hour in, I don't notice the taste anymore, don't know if I got used to it, or if my juice finally overtook the flavor of the cotton. Either way, the vapor production is off the chart and I'm thinking I need to lower my nic level using this method.. doubt I will ever go back to using silica again.
Long story short , glad I'm not the only one, I was starting to rethink my idea of buying.cotton balls at Biglots.. lol ..

I got my Peaches and Cream from Walmart - the yarn wasn't sealed at all, and even though I'm not a clean freak, I thought it should probably be boiled, looking at all the people in the store....LOL It's 100% cotton, ecru - no nylon in it. I have a hard time telling the difference between using that and cotton balls, so I tend to switch them up depending on which is closer to me when I rewick! I have learned the key is to use less than you think - choking off the coil is bad.
