I'm beginning Day 4 of vaping, and developed a dry cough on Day 2 that just keeps on keeping on. Wakes me up at night. I never had this smoking analogs at PPD for 40+ years. I'm ordering ejuice from popular websites, and vape far more menthol than any other flavor. I assume the base is PG. What do I do? It's getting me down and worrying the hell out of my husband!

Ms. Jackie are you drinking plenty of water while vaping? Any other symptoms but the cough? Could be a pg allergy, or could be dehydration, or your body trying to get rid of ask the crap that has built up in your lungs over the past 40 years. Too high of nicotine/what flavor you're using could be providing too much th causing you to cough as well....

PG is hard on your throat and menthol is going to irritate it a little. Higher nicotine levels will irritate you as well. I use chewing gum to keep saliva levels up when I feel my throat is getting too dry and keep my water intake high. I also vape 100% VG which is a lot less drying on the throat but many prefer a VG/PG mix over pure VG.

Stick with it if you can, the first week or two is the hardest on your throat because you're no longer getting the anesthetic chemicals in analogues and you're inhaling something drying and getting nicotine in there which can be an irritant. It gets better with time as your throat repairs from smoking and adjusts to the vapour.

I assume from the way you've worded this that you are no longer smoking, correct?

The OP's lungs are also attempting to get rid of a lot of build up from years of smoking too. When I first started (I was a 1+ PPD -- a night out could make it 3 although that was years earlier in my 20+ year habit) I coughed for weeks just as I had done every time before when I'd quit smoking for more than 3 days or so.

A big part of the coughing is the lungs clearing themselves. WATER, WATER, WATER is the answer ... that and some patience, because it takes a few weeks sometimes before the lungs are clear enough for it to subside.

Thank you to all! I'm going to drink more water and see what happens ... I hardly drink any. My nic strength is in the medium range of ~18, and UNfortunately I'm still smoking 1/2 PPD, but determined to keep tapering off until it's 0 per day. Vaping is a far better habit and an extremely easy replacement ... but it's amazing that my thinking I still need "real" cigs is so strong. Sheesh!

Jackie - I really think that continuing to smoke is as much a state of mind as anything else. I started vaping in May, but still had cigs around. I was determined to finish off what I had, and still bought more tobacco (I rolled my own cigs, but I had the tubes and tobacco in the house). Even though I bought another bag of tobacco, I though "why bother?" If you can decide that vaping can meet your needs, then you can just say "I don't really want another analog". I thought that some of the hardest part was giving up on the CO and other crud in the analog, but I just vape more instead of going and having an analog. I've now gone over two weeks without rolling any more analogs - granted I bummed one yesterday, but that's still one in 16 days - I'm OK with that :) I didn't have the instant loss of desire for a "real" cigarette, but vaping really has made it possible for me to get over it. Best of luck to you.

It can take a week or two to get used to the dry vapor. It's quite different from the smoother smoke of a cigarette since tobacco has chemical additives. Plenty of water helps and so will gum or throat lozenges.

If you are direct inhaling, it can irritate your throat. Also try drawing in the vapor with some outside air, holding it in your mouth first and then gently inhaling for a while until you get used to it. Some people say that using your tongue above the mouthtip to block direct flow of the vapor to the throat can help. Hot dry hits when you are new can irritate your throat also, it takes some getting used to keeping an atomizer wet, especially a small one such as the 901. Drip on the atomizer bridge a few drops each time you refill to help keep it very wet.

If it continues, try switching to a VG liquid (or buy some VG from Walmart and cut your liquid to see if it helps, and then just buy some new VG liquid). PG reactions can cause many things, including excessive post nasal drip (some saline spray can help) and that could have you coughing at night. A visit to an ENT physician could determine if that is the cause of your coughing.

Last... it could also be a reaction to the flavor you're vaping (have you tried a clean atty and a different flavor?). Some have an allergy reaction to flavorings, and symptoms can be mild like a cough or more severe like tongue swelling or mouth sores, so it's good to be aware if it only happens with certain flavors. Try to buy small sample bottles from vendors so you can find some you like and may be milder for you.

The eGo is supposed to be good - I use the iGo which is a derivative of the eGo with a little larger battery and a cartomizer that holds more (up to 3ml). The eGo probably gives you more flexibility to play around with other options - easier for dripping, more cartomizer or atomizer options. Overall it's probably one of the most popular standard PVs out there now.

I'm betting that once you make the step to stop the analogs, the cough will clear up after a few days (at least mine did), and as your sense of smell returns to normal it gets easier to not want another one. I still want them occasionally (and as I mentioned, I did have one yesterday), but the biggest thing stopping me now is after all these years finally realizing how much I smelled like an old ashtray after smoking all day. I can tell a coworker went out for one when they walk past my desk, and I think wow, did I always reek like that? The answer of course, was yes.

Enjoy vaping and welcome to ECF - this is a great bunch of people who know exactly what you're facing. The support here is incredible :)

Buy Better Juices

Juice with some VG in it. I started on 70pg/30vg but now that I use stuffing-type cartomizers I find 80pg/20vg helps my cartos wick and vape well longer.

Also don't go overboard with nicotine. Nicotine is a skin irritant. medium and high nicotine can irritate the mouth, throat and even lungs. Some VG in the juice will help buffer that.

And drink plenty of fluids - vaping can be drying

I referring to fact that sense of smell comes back after quitting cigarets.
I have a green card for my arthritis it's medical for me and totally legal and as for drugs I have found that nicotine has been most addictive.
As for any post count I don't know what that means? Do I get a prize after certain amount of posts?
I'm just trying to have fun here why you guys bagging on the new guy?

Which has NOTHING to do with the OP and topic of coughing... (and gee, why did you make a reference to sneaking outside when the wife could smell it "because she had no idea" you used it?:glare:)

I call B.S. Nice try... Really, better read http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/announcements-rules/51178-forum-rules.html

When you post something off topic in a serious thread, it's going to be taken as trying to boost your post count up to 15 (so you can get out of the New Member's Forum and have other permissions in the forum) AND it's irritating as hell. Please read the link above and Forum Rules so you understand (and before a Moderator decides to "bang" on you instead of us). :glare:

BACK on to the original topic (and if perocity can't figure out to apologize, I will. Sorry to derail this thread!!)...

I hope the OP will post here again when the issue is sorted out or if there are other concerns. It could be helpful to others.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I started up.

I did a ton of research and purchases a 5V big kazoo right out of the gate. I then decided to use 24mg juice since I was a heavy smoker. Well 5V at 24mg put me in a world of hurt when I was starting and I think that caused my initial cough. Once I dropped down to a manual 510 battery and 12mg juice the cough/irritation went away.
