So my friend wanted to try my e-cig... He doesn't smoke, or use any type of e-cig. So I popped in some 0mg liquid, and he coughs his brains out... He has a VERY bad coughing fit. I tried PG and VG, doesn't matter he coughs.

The weird thing is, when I started smoking analogs, I never coughed (and that's with direct inhaling). And when I started e-cigs I never coughed aswell (mouth, then lungs)...

He's doing mouth to lungs and still coughing very badly.

Can anyone explain why this is happening? I've never even seen someone cough this bad with analogs.

I also wonder why he even wants to try it in the first place enough to try the different versions. I loved smoking but wish I had never started.

It was 0mg, so he just wanted to try the flavor.

every one is different

but you should seize this moment, call him a NOOB

Hahaha, trust me, I got that covered ;)

My husband's aunt was coughing a lot when she got her first PV. After a day or two she was fine. I think some people just have to get used to it.

I experienced that same thing. I actually coughed quite a bit every time I tried to vape when I first started. It didn't make any sense how I could inhale smoke with ease, but inhaling vapor was a problem. I'm not sure if it was my technique or just that I needed a little while to adjust to it, but within a few days of exclusively vaping, I didn't cough from it anymore.

I smoked analogs for 20 years, but the very first times I vaped I coughed as well, so did other long time/heavy smokers I invited to try the e-cig.

It's a 'sudden' cough, when the vapour is about to approach throat then *cough!
Not because e-liquid was too strong in nicotine or whatever.
I suppose it's our body getting to know this new substance, PG (in my case), Immediately recognised as "intruder" and expelled!

I also coughed at night on my very first 2 or 3 days of vaping... then all right, PG is now recognised as "friendly" ;)

It's funny. I smoked for 46 years and took to the ecig like a baby to a binkie. My best friend, who smoked almost as long, coughed her guts out when she tried vaping. She keeps picking it up, putting it down, but it is finally getting easier. She still has to take small inhales, though. I wonder what the differences really are.

    Eheh it's strange! yes..
I created a poll in an Italian vapers forum about this initial cough/reaction and more than a half said had no problems (like you) while the rest had this reaction, some started vaping smooth in a few days (like me) for some others it took a few more.

On my very first days I had to inhale with the nose! You can suggest your friend to try this trick ;) flavour is also more appreciable this way.

Thanks for the advice. She is still going slow and shallow, but at least it keeps her from coughing. She promises to keep at it. Can't ask for more than that. She already has COPD.

I smoked analogs for 32 years and don't remember ever coughing - probably because I didn't inhale, then over time I did.

Then, I started e-cigs after a month of no-smoking (the Commit Lozenge wasn't cutting it). With e-cigs, I had no coughing either not even with the heaviest of drags.

My boss, whose been smoking heavily for just as many years as I , coughed heavily when I had him try the e-cig. But then he coughed "with analogs". He thinks the taste of the e-cig is too strong. BTW, he thinks Snus is too strong for him too.

He quit analogs for about a month and finally stopped hacking up every 20 minutes. He was doing good with nic cravings until he decided to have a couple of drags of a homemade American Spirit and that got him starting again. Now, he coughs awful. I think he may have COPD.

So, I'm wondering if it's the heavier and slower drag from an e-cig is what causes people to cough, the flavors and PG in the e-cigs, the COPD that people may have and don't know it or a combination of the above.

I think it's a throat sensitivity thing because it was the second the vapor hit the back of my throat that it would make me cough. Also, when I first started, I was trying to smoke it like an analog — short, hard, direct-inhale drags. Once I learned to slowly pull the vapor into my mouth before inhaling, it didn't bother me. And now that I'm used to it, I don't cough no matter which way I vape.

I think you are right. She still won't take longer puffs. But I think she'll adjust. She is very much a person who "enjoys" the cigarette.
