Hi everyone!

I am still waiting on my eroll, which should arrive tomorrow, but I got an inexpensive 510 to start trying vaping with. It's a pretty old-school cigalike. And it came with 30ml of a 70/30 pg/vg ratio juice.

I am a little worried, because no matter what I try with inhaling (holding it in my mouth before drawing into my lungs, etc) as soon as I try to draw it in to my lungs, it causes a coughing fit. I am not worried about the quality of the juice, because I got it from a vendor with a very solid reputation locally.

Is this just normal and I need to acclimate, or due to the cheap 510, or am I doing something wrong when I inhale? I really want this to work for me, but if it maks me cough like this, I don't think I can deal with it.

You could possibly be allergic to the PG You can test this by going to the vendor and getting some 100% VG juice and see if you get the same reaction. A lot of people cough at first though if you remember you coughed a lot when you started smoking also. Depending on how long you smoked and how much your lungs could just be in bad shape and need some smoke free time get better.

You can also try not inhaling but puff the vapor and breath it threw your noise. You'll still get your nic fix this way.

Before I started vaping I had a very bad smokers cough. I had the same problem when I started vaping. For me it was the juice I was trying to vape. I started with a menthol that was suppose to be close to my analogs.... needless to say there is a big differance between vaping and analogs. I had to change to a dfferent menthol and lower the nicotine amount but just until my lungs adjusted to vaping. Now I vape anything I want with out coughing at all. Please keep in mind I was a very heavy smoker ( 3 pad for over 35 years).

New vapors often experience coughing, dry mouth, and/or some sore throat in the beginning. This is commonplace and normal, nothing to worry about. Just as it took our bodies a period of time to get used to smoking cigarettes, there is also an adjustment period to vaping e-liquids.

ECF InfoZone - The is the E-cigarette Forum Information Zone, for all your ecig needs

There is a recommended technique to vaping that might be different from how you smoked a cigarette. A slow, gentle, 4-5 second draw into the mouth, much like sucking on a milkshake. A shorter draw might be advised for new users. You can then finish inhaling into the lungs if you desire.

However, it is not necessary to inhale into the lungs to absorb the nicotine within vapor, due to the difference in the size of molecules of vapor vs smoke. Most nicotine in vapor is absorbed in the mouth, nose and throat. For the full vaping experience similar to smoking an analog, most people do inhale into the lungs.

Many years of smoking affects our taste ability. It is recommended to exhale some of the vapor through the nose to assist our damaged taste buds to "taste" the flavor in the vapor. The sense of smell is closely related to our sense of taste. You can understand this better if you recall how muted or tasteless food is when we have a head cold; at that time the nose is obstructed and can not receive aroma molecules in the air to assist the tongue to taste.

I agree that vaping can cause dry mouth (which can contribute to affecting taste, too), and recommend sipping water frequently while vaping.

Thank you! I don't cough if I keep it in my mouth, but I find I still want to reach for my stinkies, and I was hoping if I did a full draw into the lungs it would be more satisfying. Glad to know this is normal :) I also have some samples coming with differeng vg/pg ratios and nicotene strength ( I had no idea what would work best for me, so figured I should try a few)

Good idea to try different pg/vg ratios and nicotine strengths. Each individual's preference will be somewhat different, as will flavor preferences. And be aware that all these preferences may change over the course of time as you have been vaping awhile.

Vaping is not near as easy as it is to just pick up a cigarette and light it up. Therefore, knowledge, determination, and willpower is needed to kick the habit. But vaping does have advantages over the other nicotine replacements such as the gum and patches.

Vaping allows one to increase their nicotine need during a cigarette craving by increasing the frequency of vaping to meet the urge requirements of nicotine. The patch is only designed to deliver a steady amount of nicotine over time, and chewing more gum may increase side effects (for me it was hiccups).

Vaping also allows the important need for the hand-to-mouth ritual that is deeply encoded in our brains. It also allows for the fulfilling sensation of vapor in our lungs not unlike what cigarette smoke provided. And many people continue to enjoy seeing smoke-like vapor being exhaled.

What nic level are you using? Sorry if this was already asked. Maybe too high of a level?

Granny hit it on the nail head, as usual Granny is always right:laugh:. You are experiencing Throat Hit, most likely due to a high nicotine level. When you order cartos or juice, lower the nicotine to about 6 mg or 12 mg. It possibly could be the PG/VG ratio, but I would experiment with the nicotine level first.

I am not sure the coughing is related to PG... same juice make me cough sometimes but not coughing most of the time. There's a lot of variables, the temperature of the vapor for one is a significant factor. I tend to cough more when I use higher voltage on my eGo c twist. Also, make sure you get your wick saturated enough so you don't get dry hits.

Inhale into your mouth and then pull it into your lungs. Don't directly inhale into your lungs. And drink water.

You may try a higher resistance atomizer--I got a Mini Vivi Nova (which may not fit on your setup, I'm too much of a noob to know) and changed the 2.4 head out for the 2.8 one, and got a much, much smoother hit. I don't know how or why it works, or whether it will work for you, but it was life changing for me!

Ok, so what I am getting from you all is that it could be a lot of things, lol. The good news for me is that I do have different (and from my reasearch, better) equipment coming, I was just too impatient to wait. I did also order my samples with different nic levels as well as flavours, and from a couple of different vendors, so i've gpot some arying pg/vg ratios in there. I'll get this working for myself yet :)

Having a PG allergy will commonly produce an annoying throat itch. But just because you dont have a throat itch doesn't mean that you aren't allergic. You could just be affected differently. You should also check out the nicotine strength. Nicotine affects throat hit, how harsh your vape can be. When I started vaping I had the craziest coughing fits I started at 24 mg or 2.4% nic. I quickly moved down in strength and found 18 was slightly better. After this I moved to 12 wich was perfect for me.
