Generally this happens if the voltage is a bit to high, if your unit is adjustable you can turn the voltage down to solve it, if you are not getting a burnt flavor with it up, the crackling is harmless. Another thing that can cause it is if the tank wasn't completely dry after a cleaning, the excess moisture can cause some crackling, again if it isn't affecting the flavor then its fine.

As someone mentioned, when your coil gets gunked up, the sound will stop and so will your flavor, so consider it the sound of your system working; a usefull sound.
If you listen to the sound, you get accustomed to what sound to listen for; it tells you whether your coil is getting flooded; or whether the coil might be getting too hot.

So I am not going t answer your question entirely but I will share some crakin and poppin info that I have learned.

1. Cracky poppy: When you have a dripper with a heavily sweetened juice and it sits for a day or so, take a pull and pow! I almost dropped one of my mods the other day.

2. Crick Crack: When you build a coil and the wicking is so thin juice spatters all over inside the atty.

Those are just two of my experiences, I added more juice and checked to make sure the coil was wet on number 1, and I make sure my wicking is a bit more snug on my coils from now on.
