When I vape, I often hear a crackling or popping sound, and feel something very small hitting my tongue/lips. It tastes kinda gross, so I'm assuming that somehow, the juice is getting fired up enough to pop into my mouth from the tube. I have tried rinsing the clearo with water but that didn't help much. Maybe the one I got is of inferior quality.

Comments online vary from "it's very common and normal" to "throw your clearomizer once that happens", so I'm a little confused as to what I should do with the popping. For the record, here

is a picture of my setup. I don't have backup clearos, but am hopefully getting some soon.

Please feel free to comment!

It does happen when you're just starting out.
You'll notice that the crackling and spitting of juice only happens on the first fire. What happens is that the wick is over-saturated with juice and the juice pops up when heated. You can have 2 of the same type clearo, yet one may spit, but not the other. That's because there are tolerances in the wicks and wicking holes.

Since you're using what looks like a ce4 clearo with the wicks in the tube, it might not be worth the effort to solve the problem. But these are the things you can try.

1) Juice with higher vg content. Slower wicking, but will still cause spitbacks if device is not used for some time.

2) Unscrew drip tip (yours looks like it's the screw on type). With a pair of tweezers, get the translucent silicone cap off. A bit fiddly here. You might have some difficulties. With the cap off, you should be able to see your coil and the wick. I'm assuming you don't have any silica wicks. So get some cotton and roll it between you fingers to kinda make it into a string. Not too tight and not too loose. Place it on top of the coil and replace silicone cap and drip tip. You MIGHT need a few tries before you know the right amount of cotton to use.

3) Can't see where the wicking holes are in your picture. But you can try to leave the device such that the juice does not enter the holes when the device is not in use for a long time.

4) Easiest solution is to fire device away from lips, wait for it to pop. Then bring device to lips and fire away to vape. You shouldn't encounter any pops.....until you leave device aside for some time.

Hope this helps.

    Crackling and popping is normal.
Yep, perfectly normal. It means that it's doing what it's supposed to do.

+1 on that. The atomizer is at the 'top end of the tank' with a CE4 device like you've got there, so a bit of the liquid popping into your mouth will happen more. You definitely want to make sure you fill it correctly too. You should tilt the thing over maybe as much as 65-70 degrees to make sure liquid doesn't get into the inner tube, and it'll fill a whole lot easier if you turn the whole thing (just before you add liquid, don't keep turning it) to add the liquid to one of the 'non-wick' sides.

Ah, it's just that the liquid in my mouth kind of numbs it a little, and it makes me paranoid that long term persistence will give me some kind of poisoning.

I think I have found the right amount of cotton to put in there. The vaping is a lot smoother and stronger, and I can vape without little juice-men attacking my tongue. I'll definitely start tilting it to fill, though. I used to just fill the tank while holding it vertically, and it was so tedious to do. I was constantly getting liquid in the chimney. Thanks for all your help!
