Sorry! Your card is more likely to be stolen if it is personally swiped, meaning you hand the card over and they swipe it. The card and number shows up on the retailer's receipt. They could write down the number, and get the CVC code off of the back and pretty much start using it.
I have noticed retailers asking for zip codes. But when I hand over a card to somebody, I watch them every minute. If they take too long or go in the back room to swipe it, I confront them. Most terminals are out in the open or close to the front near the customer. This is not always the case. Just my experience.
