This seriously depends on what you mean by 'custom mod'.
If you mean a plastic box with some batteries and a feeder in it, yes, there is a MAJOR difference beyond aesthetics.

If you mean strictly function...well, yes and no.

Does this custom PV have the following:
LED Readout
Variable/Regulated Voltage from 3.3 - 6 volts
Atomizer Resistance Meter
Battery Level/Voltage Meter
On/Off mode
16 second cut off
Short Circuit/Atomizer Protection
Reverse Battery Protection
Battery Monitoring/Over-Discharge Protection
Amperage Limiting to 2.5 amps
Stock Warranty: 1 Year

The Provari DOES have all this, and a whole bunch more....

Do you need/want all that stuff? It's not 'essential' for a very high quality vape by any means. It IS there however, and it is all very nice stuff to have built right into the PV in a small micro-board smaller than a quarter.

When it comes to how well the device is built, and the grade and quality of materials involved...there is probably a LOT of difference depending on what 'Custom Mod' you have in mind.

In short, the Provari and Darwin are premiere 'high tech' mods. Performance beasts with alot of techy bells and whistles.

If you're into 'beautiful mods', consider the following.

How long does it last between charges?
What kind of batteries does it take?
Can it be done with Variable Voltage from around 3.2 volts up to 6 volts (If so I recommend getting the VV)?

From there, you can most likely tune it to a very nice vape with any carto you like. You won't have flashy meters and leds and beeps and whistles, but it'll get the job done.

If VV is out...consider that we're anxiously awaiting the Evolv 'Kick'. This little button fits in any unregulated 18650 big battery mod and gives it Variable Power similar to the Darwin! That might be a future option for you to look forward to dropping into a very beautiful mod that doesn't have VV.

I am fairly certain the hogmod (HOGMODS.COM - Home) stacks up to the provari in all ways but the wood is so very nice.

Nice, it'll do you for power, and beauty. Yep.
Not sure how long that stacked battery combo would last before it needs a charging?
Just won't have the bells and whistles.

Be careful with a woody...it'll be very fragile compared to the Vari (which you could probably throw against a brick wall as hard as you can, pick it up, screw on an atty, and vape on).

Get a cheap multi-meter from radio shack if you don't already have one to test your batteries from time to time, and check atties if needed :)

I really like my provari I love being able to test ohms on the attys and cartos and seeing the voltage on my battery without having to break out the meter, that being said I just got a Krescendo Dual 510 18650 Evercool Bottomfeeder and this monster rocks, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the provari but then again the provari doesn't have dual 510 connectors and sadly my Reos are kind of dissapointing now that I use vv I was even thinking of selling a few so if you decide on the hog I would go for the vv option

Keep an eye out for the 'Kick' if any of your REOs are Grands with the 18650 battery.
Give me a moment and I'll post a vidi of a prototype in action.

I love the wood bottom feeders for their ease of use...just fill the bottle and squonk all day. Plus they look nice if they are handcrafted by someone who takes a lot of pride in their work.

The VV devices...like my Provari...are cool for their electronics...playing with voltages...and dialing in just the right vape temp for that particular juice.

Both have good qualities...get one of each:)

Thanks for all the feedback folks! I was kind of waiting for some sort of woodie joke to be made, even better that it was unintentional :) That Lavatube looks pretty cool. I like that it has two buttons for increasing or decreasing the voltage. The multiple click thing of the Provari looks like a bit of a hassle. Any idea what the Lavatube is made out of? I saw a video by what I assumed was the manufacturer and it seemed like it's a pretty sturdy device...

If you wait two weeks or so you could get a "Lava Tube" or whatever your local supplier calls it for $100 less than a provari
pretty much the same thing but not "ohm" meter.

Then you would have plenty of money left over for something made out of wood, glorious wood!

Direct from the Lavatube fan-club. Let's hope this turns out to be the mother of all PV's as much as it's being hyped for not even being on the market, yet.
