I was reading the threads about orders being seized, and I was wondering if there's any difference in whole ecigs being seized as opposed to pieces/parts.

Could the whole device be inserted into some cheapo piece of plastic that looked decorative (and we could throw away 8-o) and the unit sold as some sort of battery operated incense burner?

Maybe if they were renamed and travelled incognito. Kinda of like a witness protection program for 'drug delivery devices'. People have been buying odd smoking devices for ages. Has anybody seen this: VooDoo Digital Volcano Vaporizers, Vapir at PYRO Products INC

What if it were packaged with a tiny bit of actual tobacco or herbs? Surely there's a way to make all of this go away by just 'redesignating' it's use?

I ordered form overseas and it went right thru customs without a hitch. However it was mislabeled big time. They do random checks at customs througout the day and if the supplier you ordered from has some absurd label on the packege that does not have a half way decent description of the contents inside it will be seized.. For example if your ejuice is labeled as perfumes or something and it turns out to be ejuice they could get you and the supplier for false info on the label.... you do not want to have them lie for you. I they want to be hardasses they can flag all your imnports and you will never see any of your stuff from China just an fyi for ordering abroad. :p

I am pretty sure that custom can't get you for mislabeling because it wasn't you who did it, but the shipment could get seized.

I had a small shipment of atomizers labeled as "spare parts" hung in customs for +108 hours.

I had them shipped without the smoking tip mouthpieces to make them more incognito. In retrospect, this may not have been the best plan. Customs may have inspected and thought they were detonators :D

Update: My package was not opened or inspected. It just took forever to be released. It also was not declared as "spare parts" but as "Toy Gift Box"
