The drug companies that make nic patches and gum have certainly known of this chemical for many years and might even remember why they didn't develop a treatment with it. The article says the main benefit is lower cost but that doesn't mean much if the treatment doesn't work any better than gum and patches.
Presumably the problem with these types of treatments is relapse. Yesterday, after 6 weeks on zero cigs I was persuading a brother to start
vaping. To make a point I smoked one of his cigarettes then declined another and felt no interest in having another (the taste was not what I remember). I've lost interest in cigarettes, even after smoking one. That's way better than "quitting".
vaping isn't a treatment, it's a substitute.
