Lately, non smokers and current cigarette smokers have been warning me about the dangers of vaping. Everybody keeps saying how they saw on the news or CNN on how ecigs are 10-15x more cancerous than cigarettes. Its getting so annoying bc I feel 100x better now that I vape and don't smoke cigs anymore. Even my father who still smokes after 50 years said that he saw a special on CNN last night about the hidden dangers of ecigs and being 15x more cancerous. I mean what is really going on here? Is society trying to scare us so we go back to smoking cigarettes? Please voice you opinion on this matter as I'm getting so annoyed lately on how people are telling me these things. Cigarette smokers see these news ad's and would rather continue smoking than even consider vaping. Its giving our new hobby, community, and way of life a very bad rap!

Even my girlfriend's friend emailed her an article of the dangers of formaldahyde found in ecig vaper for me to read. Its getting out of control. I can boost up vaping and the health benefits I seen since I quit smoking 3 months ago (and they are huge) however the truth remains that ecigs are too new to see the long term risks. So no matter how much we argue the benefits and safety of it, we can't argue with the possible long term side effects of it until studies are done in 10-15 years from now.

Seriously try to show them how much FUD they are getting from Big Pharma/Big Tobacco companies. Just because it was on CNN or NBC does not mean its a good scientific study.. There was a study I read about the Carcinogens in ecigs using a variable 100sec drag... 100 SECOND DRAG! I guess average vapors have massive lungs.
Get informed and make a decision that is right for you. With enough info I can strike down any ANTZ I see trying to pull off my happy vaper hat.
Vape responsibly and enjoy yourself :vapor:

Edit: You could also mention that there are Carcinogens in potato chips, and nicotine in Tomatos, or that you are exposed to more chemicals while waiting at the bus stop than vaping eliquid! Lets see them ban potato chips... Then the sky is falling.

Well you have to know whats in your juice do you / do they ? probably not.
The fact is Propylene glycol :Propylene glycol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glycerol in vegetable form :Glycerol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Now with the flavoring some are different than others but your bakery ones could and probably do contain Diacetyl :Food Flavorings and Lung Disease (Diacetyl)

So I would have to have a legitimate lab report that shows formaldehyde found in ejuice before I would believe it....

You could always come back with " your right I should just get me some CHANTIX and be safer " :FDA: Anti-smoking drug Chantix linked to more than 500 suicides | Al Jazeera America

Yea, ever since I started vaping, people I know suddenly share BS facts of e cigs on Facebook, tell me about.it n etc. Ive told them I have done my research and then I tell them that the info they found are bribed by tobacco companies and the method they use to test isn't even possible for humans to do. I have couple of buddies that swears up and down that those danger of e cigs articles are totally legit, then I ask them to count how many ingredients are in the e juice, and they give me wrong numbers.

Big tobacco still has a TON of influence. You can't openly threaten the livelihoods of the most powerful companies and the richest people in the last 100+ years and not expect some kickin' and screamin'. I'll take my tin hat off now. LOL

That is not a tin hat topic. It threatens a large change in world society. People are generally resistant to change. They are scared to change. Meanwhile, we are working to reduce the threats that are real:

Batteries stressed beyond their limits by people who don't know enough about battery safety.

Chemicals released by dry hits.

The diversity of people in their tolerance of VG, PG, nicotine, and flavorings.

Problems with diketones and other flavoring ingredients which are dangerous in large quantities, including flavoring oils.

Problems with dehydration associated primarily with the use of propylene glycol.

We know about all those, and are working on them.

Meanwhile, more and more people are coming to regard vaping as a huge unstructured guinea pig project, with minimal risks and large benefits. To deprive people of the benefits of quitting smoking by first requiring highly structured clinical trials is ethically unsound. And the tobacco and pharmaceutical industries urge this first, not because they are ethicists, but because there is a threat to their profit line. People, deprived of vaping, could die before the data is in. We are willing to take chances; many of us have failed many times before, but succeeded with this without much more than a single look backwards, in awe.

Many cigarette smokers embrace the notion that vaping is dangerous because then they have an excuse not to try it. IMO your best option is to simply nicely but firmly tell those people that you no longer wish to hear their negative comments about vaping.
If you further wish to elaborate you could also say that you disagree with the junk science they are listening to. Most of those articles do not even site an actual scientific study and the ones that do take the results out of the context of how the study/test was actually conducted.

So far the biggest danger for me is that I think I like it too much.

I have to doubt the 'studies' and 'facts' that there are hidden dangers...well honestly, there might be. A real fact is that we know most of what's in the juice, with the exception of some flavorings that seem to be slightly shady, and even those slightly shady flavorings have minute amounts of the chemicals found in actual cigarettes. I will never be convinced that smoking is "safer" than vaping.

I will bet dollars to cents that the majority of supposed studies about the dangers of vaping are paid for and made up by Big Tobacco, they have everything to lose.

I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but I would say that the most common danger is dehydration.

I work in an office job, and it's cool and humid where I live (SW Pennsylvania). Even so, I do find myself with dry mouth from vaping. I consciously drink more (I wish I could say "water" but in all honesty, it's either coffee or tea) to combat it. I even keep a bottle of seltzer water by my bed for when I wake up. I usually have a dry mouth upon waking, because I vape before I go to sleep.

I would think if you are a physical person in a hot, arid climate....the dangers from being dehydrated from vaping can become very serious.

wow the things people do just to scare and stop a new movement of a healthier alternative. while nicotine is carcinogenic it's not nearly as bad as cigarettes with the thousands of other carcinogenic ingredients they put in them (I'm not even sure they know the recipe!) plus smoke vs vaper. look at all that and way your options...glad you're here at ECF where you'll find lots of support and information. welcome to the forum drifts and vape on! find some solid sources and maybe try to inform them

Take a look at these numbers ...

PMI.com Earnings Results

Check the rake of you local gubmint on tobacco tax

Factor in the grantz for the ANTZ ...

A whole industry lives off you smoking
Another whole industry lives off you tryin to quit smoking.
Most gubmints are over their ears in hock, so your tobacco tax's already spent till the year 2060.

Expect them to get off the gravy train without raising hell ?

Didn't think so.

And someone once said: the first casualty in any war is the truth...

Us vapers are already lost to them - so they're hard at work keeping the rest of customer base from finding out.

No surprises here. Actually, I keep hoping they laying it on even thicker and heavier - eventually people with half a brain left thn might get into thinking...

Anyone who has tried to make health comments to me regarding my e-cig has learned to quickly regret it.

Very rarely do they expect to get a science/chemistry lesson and by the time i'm half-way done with the facts their heads are spinning and they quickly lose interest/their attitude.

Or just ask them: 'Did you read the study/junk science thing/etc, besides the headline'? and when they inevitably say 'No', say 'Well i did, lets leave it at that'. That will usually end the conversation.

Knowledge is power.

But the units may deliver hazardous chemicals, according to preliminary checks by federal regulators. In a notice to importers, the FDA blocked continued shipments after finding diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans.
The government's statement noted there are no health warnings on the products, and that "the FDA analyses detected carcinogens, including nitrosamines."
The notice of the import ban says "the product appears to be a combination drug-device," that "requires pre-approval, registration and listing with the FDA" in order to be marketed in the United States.

Seriously ? can they lay out a chemical list of whats in a cigarette PLEASE !

I found this warning tag attached to the glove box of my new car - A Cancer Warning Label Based on California’s Proposition 65. If you live in California chances are you have seen this tag.

From the Cancer.org website:

"Labels warning that a product contains compounds that may cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm are now required on many household items sold in California. But people all over the country see them because many companies put the labels on all items that contain these compounds, even if they’re to be sold in other states. The warning labels can be found on many kinds of products, such as electrical wires, jewelry, padlocks, dishes, flashlights, and pesticides, to name just a few."

Potential cancer causing compounds are everywhere it seems, and I don't see any definitive proof yet that vaping is worse that smoking cigarettes. I'd much rather trust my own body and how I feel. For instance, I can run now without my lungs burning. When I smoked and would run, my lungs felt as if they were on fire. Although that doesn't definitively prove that vaping is safe, I think the jury is already out on the damage tobacco smoking does.

Also, as someone mentioned above, nicotine is found in small quantities in tomatoes and in nightshade plants in general.
