I placed an order over the weekend for 10 feet of the stuff.. was really excited to see what the hype was all about.

This morning a rep from Omega called and asked me what the application would be, I told him I intended to use it as a wicking material for an electronic cigarette, after properly treating it of course. He replied the material is for industrial use only and said he would be cancelling my order.

Just a heads up to anyone intending to try and buy it from them.

At first I really loved this stuff because when I dry burned it I wouldn't get the nasty taste for a while afterword, but now I've noticed that I'm getting a muted flavor with my juices. I loaded up 2 tanks with the same juice, one with the xc-116 and one with silica and I got way more, better flavor from the silica. I still get the same amount of vapor from both just minus the flavor from the xc-116. I don't know why this is it wicks fine just not as much flavor. I will still try it for a while to make a final decision but right now it's not looking good for the xc-116. So in conclusion don't sweat it the xc-116 isn't that great.

One thing I've noticed about any wicking material is that the more you use (in a setup) the more adverse effect it has. I've become an absolute minimalist with ALL wicking materials. I like the ceramic rope because it's structure allows me to use very little. (If anyones seen the "O"-wick; that was just for fun) Here's my "final" version of a Nextel wick for AGA

I just ordered some xc-18 and made the same mistake  "wick for electronic cigarette"
It occurred to me that it might be a trick question but so many ppl ordered, I figured...nah...
Hope they fill the order.

I wonder if you ordered it under the pretense that you were going to use it to sleeve control wires passing thru the engine compartment of a project track car? One of its main uses appears to be sleeve (enclose / protect) wires in high heat applications.

Perhaps they are reluctant to sell it because its coated in some pretty dangerous shi t?

From what I have read, it's a type of silica. It was also not designed to be inhaled not are there any long term tests on inhalation because its not classified as inhalable.

I'm not a paranoid freak or anything, but being in construction management for as I have, I've seen enough MSDS on silica to know that I try to avoid it. I Also tend to avoid messing around with anything that can cause bronchial tract / lung inflammation (hell, that's why I quit smoking, cause its bad for me, not because I didn't like it).

Here's an interesting read on Nextel ceramic (not clay) fibers.

Oh I understand why they didn't sell it to me, and their reasoning is sound. I was fully prepared to fire the stuff in a kiln, and I told them that.

I posted this thread just to let people know that if they plan to take the personal responsibility of treating this stuff and using it for wicks then be prepared to tell Omega you intend to use it for something other than e-cig wicks.

I have since bought some treated xc-116 from BigTex and I'm so blown away with the stuff I don't even mind paying BigTex prices. I can't imagine a better wick material, I just don't think there's much room for improvement. Awesome stuff.

Correct response is thermo shielding for thermo couplers

Good one. I guessing that the salesman could trip the average ecig user up pretty easily with a few questions if you use that one though, such as "what kind of application"? "Why ya need so little" and "what's the od of the conductor"?

about 15 minutes with a web browser the and the average person can learn as much as I did about it.

If your gonna try to bullish it someone, learn a little about the bullish it first if you hope to succeed :)

Thanks for the spec. post, Supe. I'd read this before, but this time I saved it. So, long story short, as long as i'm vaping in glasses and gloves, good to go, right?

Nah, ya should be fine as long as you ain't inhaling dust from it directly and it is heat treated like the stuff you get is. The more I read about it the more interested I get and I was already interested :)

I ordered some. Anticipated a call and had an intended hobby/industrial use in mind. (insulation for fine jewelry jigs). I may use some of it for that, but imagine ordering, for some odd use, and getting a phone call - "Are you planning to use this for e-cigarettes?.. ...Huh? I was too busy smiling and laughing to myself to muster up a "what the hell are you talking about?" response.

Thank you for your interest in Omega’s nextel sleeving products. The material you have requested is intended for industrial applications only. In addition, Omega does not recommend this material for food, cosmetic, medical, or pharmaceutical use. Based on our review of the application description that you provided, we cannot provide you with the requested material because your proposed application is not an industrial application.
Your order will be closed at this time

Just got this from Omega...
but I don't have a kiln to prep it anyways, so that's probably a good thing.

Is there any nextel 1/8" diameter that doesn't need a kiln? all I have is a good torch from back in the ss mesh days :)
I'd love to try some in a genny...

I've ordered from them a few times and each shipment includes 3 pages of info. 1 of which explains how the particles are too large to get lodged in the lungs, unlike traditional silica.

Spose it makes sense that they have a liability issue on their hands with the chemical that needs to be burned off. There are always going to be those that aren't aware and don't read the warnings and consume the chemical thru the vaping process.

I'm kinda irresponsible myself, I often go with the flow...and I have to admit, without doing the homework. I actually appreciate those guys not selling to make a quick buck...
I remember seeing someone torch a nextel to orange meaning i can coil it with a 26 or 28 gauge and vape the hell out of it...
That would be nice...

Even torching it to orange isnt enough to get the chem off. They recommend a kiln, but a torch will work. You are supposed to keep it at the orange glow for like 2 mins. So it takes a long time to torch even a small pc to set up 1 atty.

It can be had on Ebay all the time for those who want to try it if Omega stops selling to us.
