My friend and co-worker has developed a cough and sore/scratchy throat since she started vaping about a week and a half ago. When I talked with her today, she sounded terrible- like she has a cold or bad allergies. Her symptoms are limited to the cough and scratchy throat, though.

She's been exclusively vaping VFL Cowboy cartos on a KR8. I questioned her about whether or not she's experienced a burnt taste and she denied it- although it's hard to believe she hasn't burned through a carto, yet. She isn't topping them off or anything.

I wonder if she might be having some sort of reaction to whatever mix is in the cartos. For now, I suggested she stop vaping at least until tomorrow and I filled a VFL cool carto with Johnson Creek Tennessee Cured. I'm also bringing her a small bottle of it to top off her cartos as she uses them. Yeah, it's a different flavor than Cowboy, but at least its a good tobacco flavor.

I told her that I would check on here to see if anyone else has experienced that, and if it could be something in the pre-filled cartos that isn't agreeing with her respiratory system. Any ideas?

She is a heavy smoker, so maybe that's it. I also recommended that she drink a lot of fluids, especially when she's vaping.

I'll show her the info in the link. I'm wondering if maybe she should try all VG. I don't think she's interested in filling cartos and all of that, though.

After encouraging her to take up vaping, I feel bad that she's having problems. Either way, I'll do my best to discourage her from giving up until we see if we can find something that works.

Thanks for the info!

Hey … I have been vaping almost a year now – still struggle with periodic dryness in throat.
I have tried VG + PG = no real difference – although I have heard of allergy to PG.

You use Cartomiser? – I have a big problem with them – not happy with heating element going through synthetic fiber.
Try 901 atty - should work on your KR8... battery.

My real solution is to drink fair amounts of liquid and have a mint or light cough drop (Halls – Honey) – usually 1 or 2 a day sort it out for me.

When I went to see my doctor about the various methods of quitting, she warned me that I might cough a lot during the first few weeks-REGARDLESS OF THE METHOD.

By the way, she was the one that told me about e cigarettes and said that was one of the ways of doing it, although it would not be covered by my health insurance.

Nonetheless, a week and a half is a long time to have a cough, so your friend should go see a doctor.

It could be something in her method of vaping or an allergic reaction.

It might be very difficult to nail this one down, since whatever you do will be trial and error, and it might take weeks to figure it out.

One thing about vaping: it is a lifestyle change that requires a lot more effort than stopping off at the next store to buy another pack of cigarettes.

I honestly believe that vaping may not be a suitable method for everyone who is trying to quit analogs.

If she's not topping and continuing to vape burnt - out cartos that would be a sort of nasty thing to do... I have a friend who is new and simply can't discern when they're finished. Brought one over for me to "check" and I about died. Tell your friend to take one apart and visually see if she's taking them way too long dry. Me, I don't get that - I taste done immediately.

All I can add is to try mouth-inhaling if you are a lung-inhaler. I mouth-inhale and never have a cough. In case anyone doesn't know, mouth-inhaling is like French inhaling, where the smoke goes up your nose; but when you draw it into your lungs, after sucking it into your mouth (I said "sucking it" heh heh!), you have the option to dilute the smoke by simultaneously inhaling through the nose.
