Did I Add Too Much Nicotine?

This was my first time DIY'ing. I followed the "ejuicemeup" calculator precisely. I'm using 50mg/ml nicotine base and my target nicotine level was 18 mg. For making 10 ml of juice the recipe called for 3.4 ml of nicotine base, 1 mg flavor, and 5.6 mg straight VG. I payed very close attention and made sure not to mix up bottles, I wore gloves to avoid unwanted nicotine exposure, followed the directions very closely, and washed my hands after mixing. When I vape I feel like I am getting too much nicotine. I tossed out the first batch and made it again to make sure and I feel the same way. Everything tastes fine. By the way I used Loranne Apple for flavoring, its PG based.
Does this sound right? I have triple checked everything, it just doesn't feel like 18 mg juice when I order it from a vendor. Could the nicotine solution I ordered from Xtreme vaping perhaps be labeled incorrectly?
Let me know what you guy's think.
By the way I used syringes to measure, not drops.

3.4 ml of 50mg nic gives you 170mg of nicotine. If you end up with 10ml of juice (regardless of what else you put in there), you're going to have 170mg of nicotine, so that makes it 17mg/ml.

So, either it's 17mg/ml, or your nic juice is stronger than you think it is.

I'm going to buy a test kit and test the nicotine base strength before I make anymore. 17-18mg is exactly what I want, but it doesn't feel right. It feels more like 36+mg of nic. I know I mixed everything correctly. Nicotine is dangerous I've gotta know exactly what the mg/ml of the base is.

From another thread is this link to a nicotine test kit: PG VG Nicotine Test Kit Bromothymol Blue 12N Sulfuric Acid | eBay

There's also some possibility, I think, that some eliquids sold as 18mg don't actually contain that much nicotine per ml. One of the places where I've purchased eliquid has told me that when they say a liquid is 18mg, they mean it's no MORE than 18mg.

That's pretty lame. Altho I Used to go to a place for nic base and mentioned that it didn't have much throat hit, and he said he's now adding more pure nic to it to try to fix that, lol.

Suppliers- Whether we order 16, 18,or 20- That's kinda what we want. Especially if you charge for the difference.

If in doubt, testing is always a good idea. Also contact Xtreme and let them know. I've always had great nicotine from XV, so I'm very interested in how this shakes out.

And we are talking about Xtreme Vaping, not the new vendor that goes by Vaping Xtreme? (Just making sure because it seems the new vendor is counting on some confusion.)

You may want to mix your unflavored base first and let that steep a week or so before adding flavors. Especially if you are vaping a high% vg liquid it can take a while for everything to come together. I usually make up a bunch of unflavored base in 6oz bottles, then pull from those to make 5,10 or 30ml batches. Just add my desired flavors, steep overnight or a couple days and they're good to go.

    Test test test!

bigbell provides a link to mjradich's nicotine test. I understand it's accurate to plus or minus 10%, which is good enough for DIY purposes.

I always test the 100 mg./ml. rocket juice before I deep-six the stuff in the freezer. (And see below.) Then I test it again when it comes out of the freezer. With every batch of DIY, I mix the rocket juice with the dilutant (a PG/VG mix), then test it before I add flavoring, since flavoring can throw off the test if the flavoring is more acidic or basic.

This may seem like overkill, but remember that nicotine is miscible in PG and VG, it doesn't dissolve in them. Consequently, it's possible for the nicotine to settle out of the liquid.

    Mix mix mix!

It's possible, especially with VG since it's so thick but it could happen with PG too, that the nicotine wasn't thoroughly mixed when the base rocket juice was made.

So, before I decant a liter into 60 ml. bottles, I warm the rocket juice to about 120 degrees Farenheit and pour off half the liter into an empty liter bottle. I then shake both bottles vigorously for a good three to five minutes. Yes, I'm introducing a little bit of air into the rocket juice via air bubbles, but I'd rather have an insignificant bit more oxidation than have rocket juice that's at a wildly wrong concentration.

I also shake the base bottle vigorously before I add the PG/VG dilutant when I mix a new batch of DIY e-liquid.

A little update. My test kit came in and everything is spot on.
Perhaps I didn't shake the juice well enough after mixing and maybe hit a "nicotine hot spot". I have been vaping it these past couple of days and now it tastes fine.
I also could have been a little too cautious and my brain tricked me into thinking it was too much nicotine. Oh well though, at least I know its all good now, and hey, I have a test kit for the future in case I do get a bad batch.

My apologies to Xtreme Vaping, they did not send me a mislabeled product.
