IMHO, how soon one quits is dependent upon how dedicated one is to quitting.

I smoked Marbs over 40+ years, sometimes as much as 3 PAD during the first 20 or so years, but cut back to <1 PAD almost 20 years ago when I got some stents implanted. Doc said "we are trying to buy you another 15 years or so". Lord knows I tried and tried, but just couldn't get it done for good. The wife, kids, doctors all pretty much gave up on me ever quitting. I checked into vaping a couple years ago, but as it was with other cessation products, it seemed it would be more expensive then smoking with no assurance of success, so never tried it then.

Just over 6 months ago, my niece pulled out her e-cig. She explained her experience and let me take a couple puffs and I was once again interested. I did some research and decided this time I was going to succeed. I had checked the "local" small town shops and wasn't very impressed with my options, so made the 100+ mile drive to "the city" intending to hit several shops. As luck would have it, the first one I stopped at was extremely friendly and helpful, so picked up two set-ups and started my journey to a cigarette free life.

Although I allowed myself the flexibility to have a cig when I "needed" one, I did smoke a couple during the rest of the day even though I really didn't crave one. I stayed with just the vaping the next couple days until I had both batteries go our within 15 minutes of each other. Oh, the trauma! So did have one cig while they charged. And that was my last, just over 6 months ago. And I can honestly say I have only had two brief instances where even the thought of lighting up crossed my mind.

My wife is ecstatic (even giving me a vape gift card for Xmas), my kids are happy and supportive,my GP at least gave a general thumbs up, and best of all, my cardiologist was very supportive of this method of quitting the cigs (even though he suggested an effort to cut down on nic level). And now my nic levels have dropped from 18 to below 10 with 6 doable and in my near future. And dangiit! This WILL work...........for the rest of my life! Oh, and for my 6 month vapeversary, I let my wife throw away the 4 unopened packs of Marlboro Box I had at arms length while quitting!

Sorry for rambling on for such a direct and brief subject, but I guess that shows my passion for vaping, the greatest smoking cessation method ever! And a darn enjoyable hobby/pastime in itself! :vapor:

Started with Chantix and a vape pen April 1st after many years of a 2 pack a day habit. By April 24th there was only vaping. Im not sure I could have done it with only the Chantix. After 8 months, I don't even have the slightest urge to smoke despite sometimes sitting in the midst of several people smoking.

It took me a couple of weeks to completely quit, after >40 years smoking. I had a slightly different health problem, since I have nerve damage that includes my hands and could no longer reliably hold onto a cigarette. I was lucky enough to find ECF before I bought anything, and got good advice that helped a lot. I did have to go to 26 mg/ml to finally ditch the last couple of cigarettes.

And then, after quitting to keep from burning the house down, ended up with a bad chimney fire a couple of months later. Oh well...

Hubby and I decided to quit for health reasons. I'd tried to talk him into it for a long time, but he LOVED smoking too much. He thought... Anyway, we did a little research online and I kept talking it up and he finally consented to try vaping. (We had quit on Chantix a few years ago. Lasted 8 months. We were both homicidal, crazed freaks! NEVER AGAIN, CHANTIX!! ) We went in to a local vape shop and got lucky with a salesgirl who knew her stuff pretty well. Let us try different battery sizes, flavors, etc. We left there with 2 setups- Vision II Spinners with 1600mAh battery and Aspire Clearomizer tanks. Have since bought extra batteries and hubby and Aspire Nautilus tank. Loving it! We had one cigarette each left when we left the shop. Smoked them and haven't had another since. That was Dec. 15th. :)

I had no hard and fast intention of quitting, it was more of an experiment, but over a month's time, I went from a pk a day to 1-3 cigs a day... at which point, I figured I'd be plain stupid not to quit.

Over the summer, when I had a bit of a backslide after my appendectomy, I consciously chose to not let my cigarette addiction take me over again, and it again took about a month to phase smoking out and vaping in.

Pressuring yourself is counterproductive; allowing yourself to enjoy vaping, until it has completely edged out cigarettes in the enjoyment dept, seems to be the way to do it. Once you get down to few enough cigs per day, they taste NASTY.

I did not stop smoking cigarettes when I first started vaping. When I first bought a vape setup I just figured it would be a good way to cut down a little bit and didn't even give a thought to quitting cigarettes. I bought another ego battery a couple of weeks later and got into VV ecigs, then I got a VV/WW Mod... But I never really quit until I got into drippers, Mechanical Mods, and High Wattage Mods. I've been off Cigarettes for almost 6 months now... Kind of a weird thing to be able to say after smoking for so many years and never thinking I ever would quit.

I started vaping after a few months of quitting. I usually quit for a few months then started smoking again. Anyways I almost cried and thought ya, I might actually be able to pull it off this time. That was about 3 years ago. Hubby is still smoking so it goes to show that vaping really is a game changer, as I am not really tempted to smoke anymore. Perhaps my husband will follow suit soon :)

Didn't know I was going to quit a 53 yr smoking habit when at noon on Aug. 5, 2013 I took my first vape off my just purchased MVP. Just thought I'd continue to vape until I needed a cigarette. Haven't needed one since. Nobody more surprised than me.

That's exactly how I felt! My first 48 hrs without a cigarette.... AND I DIDN'T GIVE A RIP! Totally astounding. :D

I'm still astounded; sometimes it just hits me, I DON'T SMOKE ANYMORE! And not only do I NOT GIVE A RIP, I'm absolutely delighted!

OlderNDirt,

Your story really touched me. I am almost 61 and I smoked since I was 19. I think I am on the road to smoke-freedom like you. I also enjoy vaping ... I only started about a week ago. Thanks for posting your story.

I am more then happy to share and that it may help others in similar situations. Glad you took that first step and sincerely hope it works as well for you as it has for me. Good luck, enjoy, and happy :vapor:

Edit: And welcome to ECF, a great place in every way!
