my DuD accumulates a layer of dirty (black) condensation inside the top cap. i also see tiny black flecks at times.

im pretty sure ive got wicking issues but im not in a hurry to fix it because im getting immense TH,
which im whole-heartedly a fan of. i think im overheating my juice.

is the overheating causing the black nastiness? if so, what in the world IS this stuff? residue from teh ss wick perhaps? or maybe its burnt juice condensation..

I am not sure. I get the black flakes also, and my juice starts turning dark.
I constantly am re-adjusting my coils....so I think it might be the carbon or whatever flaking of from the wick.

Im so tired of these genesis styles....lol. But Ill keep at it because when it does work...I enjoy it.
But geeeeeez

I don't think any of that is abnormal. Happens to mine. If I notice it getting bad faster than normal I take everything apart and clean it. Once that stops helping I change the wick.

The reason I think its normal is because the same thing happens inside a cartomizer. Just seems to be the nature of vaporizing eliquid. If you're heating up a liquid to vapor and that liquid has things in it like food flavorings, then you're bound to get black crud eventually.

I was cleaning up my Dud to put it away as I don't use it much and decided to give it a vape. I did a dry burn, vaped it a while, thought it was outstanding, shot the little video, and took a picture of the wick.

I am a beginner at this and have just recently "got" it

Here it what I'm thinking on the appearance of the "used" wire. if it clean and kind of grey looking it is getting red hot while vaping and if it gunks up super bad it is not wicking well, it should gunk up slowly with use. A really good wick/coil will stay pretty clean in comparison to one wicking poorly. I must add that my observations of this is from my experience using silica.

mine is BBQ grill

What about you Kemosabe?

BBQ here too.

When it comes to e-liquid I have discovered in my travels, and now live by one simple rule.. -points at atomizer- If it ain't clear, it stays the hell out of here... lol

agreed. however, my thread title might be misleading. the dirty liquid is condensation inside the top cap. the liquid in the tank is pure and clean.

nice looking coil. but is your neg lead hitting your silicone gromet that insulates the pos pole? i had that problem. i cant tell from your photo but im sure you would notice if you were inadvertently heating that gromet.

but ANYway...back to the juice thing. im glad to hear that the black stuff is just carbon build-up. i thought i might have been creating some type of chemical reaction that was inadvisable. seems just like run of the mill vaping at this point. nice.

Sometimes the clearest, lightest juices will still leave behind a dark residue under the cap. All it consists of is the heated by-products in the juice that couldn't be vaporized fully, so I wouldn't worry about it.

The black flecks come from gunk that literally flies off of the coils when you hear those little "pops" or explosions as you vape. Again, no big deal here.

I've seen the same black flecks in a carto work their way up to the top and I feel the same as you, seems totally normal and expected.

Yeah I was gonna mention cartos too...ever notice how dark the filler material gets after vaping a few ml's of juice thru one? It's the same thing, only in cartos it gets trapped in that filler material.

Yes. i have noticed that. i have a carto tank filled with citrus punch, which is a very pale yellow color. i go to refill it and the thing looks like im vaping mud. tasted fine, but that look was disgusting. so glad i dont have to rely on those suckers anymore :)

My coil on the negative end did appear to be touching the silicone gasket on the center post. I used a safety pin to bring it out a bit and was successful in doing so but the I accidentally screwed the cap on to tight when wiping off some juice and spun the wick platform when I tried to remove it but the post didn't turn with it and I mangled the wick/coil. Here is rebuilt wick/coil, I wrapped it the other direction this time. I had to reform and oxidize the wick. Here is pic.
