Noob 1st post. I've read a lot of helpful suggestions here about periodic cleaning of attys. I'll get to that when they need to be cleaned, but my problem right now is that I can't use the attys in the first place. Please keep any response to the atty "break in period."

I got my eGo kit a couple of days ago (two attys, two batteries, etc.) A note from Cignot warned about the nasty taste of the primer, and suggested that I drip onto the metal bridge, top off a cartrige, put it on and vape, vape, vape, drip another drop, top off the cartridge and vape, vape, vape.

It didn't work. I still have that horrible taste.

Some posters have described it as a metallic taste. Some have described it as burning plastic. For me it's very similar to lighting the wrong end of an analog, except; smoking an analog after doing that clears up the taste, whereas this horrible atty taste sticks with me (I just bought a carton of analogs in hopes of getting rid of it).

Please feel free to direct me to threads that address this, but I've looked around alot so you might not be suggesting anything new to me.

Some have suggested blowing out the primer. I hadn't read that, and I only have two attys, so I haven't tried it yet.

The second one was soaked in rubbing alcohol and rinsed well with warm water before I used it. Not much difference.

One poster explained that the taste is residual in the cart. I believe that to be true (by sucking through the cart by itself) but not the primary problem.

Several have suggested that the atty may need to be used for a few days (up to a week) for the horrible taste to dissipate. I can't handle the taste; perhaps someone can refer me to an atty break-in service that uses their own batteries and juice for a reasonable fee.

I'm not yet ready to give up, but this has to be much less unpleasant or I will.

The attys came in a "kit." Does mean they could both be from a bad batch? I've recently learned that they're expendables, and will need to be replaced. Might I have better luck with a different batch on my next order of the same atty?

Is this a problem with all attys? In other words, if attys need to be replaced anyway, would I be better off with a different type? Will 510s work in an eGo?

What exactly is in the primer? If we knew that, surely we could think of something that could get rid of it before we fire up the atty.

I have other, unrelated, questions, but if I can't use an e-cig because of the horrible taste of "breaking in" attys, they don't really matter. I put my hopes into this, and so far they've been dashed. Help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will work for me, but on re-reading what I wrote, I should also mention that this forum has been a tremendous resource for me and many others. However it works out, my sincere thanks!

Ouch - that sounds complicated! I not familiar with this one, so I don't have any advice for you, but have you thought about switching what you use to a different type completely?

I use a Joye 510 (manual) that I bought from awesomevapor (dotcom) just over six months ago and both of the cigs that came with that kit still work fine and I've never had to clean anything. I've never done any kind of maintenance (I don't even know what kind of maintenance other ecigs could use). Periodically refilling the cart and charging the battery is all the time or effort I've ever spent.

It sounds like the deal you've got takes a lot more work and, based on the advice you've mentioned, it sounds like a lot of other people go to a lot of trouble with their ecigs too. I'd definitely recommend switching.

OKay, the water is great to clean them, but for that nasty primer on them do a cola soak. Go buy yourself a can of coke-a-cola, drop the atty's in a cup cover them with coke, and swirl gently. replace coke in one hour with ocasional swirling. do this for 3 hours. then boil water and move the atty's to the hot water. Then let them dry over night. Blow them out in the morning an no more primer I swear!

I though my atty's had received a double dose of primer, and this is what i did because everything else fgailed to get the taste off. the coke finally worked!!! thank god, because primer tastes so bad.

You probably have the primer in the cartridge now. Gently blow out the open end of the atty into a paper towel until it looks clear. Get a new cartridge, drip a couple drops on the atty and then take primer puffs (don't inhale) until you are sure the taste is gone. If this doesn't get rid of it, you will need to soak overnight and then bow out and let the atty dry completely. You can soak the original cart and refill it with new polyfill if you want to use it again.

I know it is frustrating but it usually is not this much trouble. Next time make sure you blow the primer out really good first and it should be fine with just a few primer puffs.

I know my attys always give off a very nasty taste when they are too dry. It's exactly like lighting the wrong end of a cigarette. I just keep adding liquid two drops at a time until it goes away. This is the primary reason I stopped using carts all together, because they never kept the atty wet enough to avoid the burnt taste. I dripped for about a month before switching to cartomizers. I'll probably never go back to attys now since the cartos give me the same or better vaping than dripping did. Plus cartos are dirt cheap and with proper care should last a decent amount of time.

Sometimes my attys needed 8-12 drops of liquid when they were totally dry to get them to vape without the burning taste, so make sure you are getting them wet enough. I also tried every cleaning method on this forum and never got rid of the the taste, the only thing that ever worked for me was adding more liquid until it went away. If you flood you atty, just blow in out a little.

Yes - blow them out - as soon as youre ready to use an atty it needs blowing out. Cup (dont grip) the threaded end into a paper towel, blow til you can't blow any more (hard blowing is fine) then clean atty threads, reverse, blow from threaded end.
Clean gently with paper towel (outside NOT inside of atty), re-prime with juice (this could be the longet part and its really not that long), puff without inhaling, re-prime puff puff, then try usuing your cart/methid with which you vape (cart/carto/dripping/whatever).
You may find the frst few puffs are still a little bit (shouldn't be a lot) tainted by primer but this should pass very quickly. Make sure it isn't too dry (edit: J21 above me covered that so Im editing my bit out lol)
If it doesn't - try a different atty after you blow it out (see above).
If the new atty is 'yay' then the old one (the one you just tried using) might be a dud - this happens, and if its brand new the vendor (who doesn't make these items btw) may exchange it for a new one; they may not but ask them nicely and see.
Remember atties, unlike puppies, are not for life and are pretty disposable items; be prepared to love/hate them, but always get spares :)
