Greetings everyone. Been lurking for a while....finally decided to create a profile after a friend, who is extremely skeptical of my new vaping habit, sent me an article that disucessed research on metal particles found in vapor. I'm really not that worried about it but it does bring up good points and this kind of stuff is easily used to scare the public on vaping. The problem seems not to be the juice itself but the soldering used in the heating element wires. And when it is heated up it releases certain metal nano particles in the vapor you inhale.

I can just hear my wife right now saying "see this research shows you are inhaling dangerous metal particles." Like I said, this doesn't scare me one bit but I do fear how this will get used by government agencies to tighten their grip on the vaping industry.

Well I can't post links but you can find it by searching for metal particles in e cigs....I got it from a website called the indy channel rtv6.

Anyways, glad to finally be a member. Look forward to hearing other respones.

As above, the particles are only of theoretical concern when using a cartomizer that has a soldered (instead of pressure-held) wire. There might be concerns as well if using an NR-R-NR (no resistance, resistance, no resistance) wire in a rebuild if the wire is soldered.

If you use a topper where the wire is pressure or screw mounted, this is definitely of no concern to you.

What the report fails to mention is that the amounts of metals found are comparable with the nicotine inhaler, and well within acceptable exposure to metal particulates. Additionally, the metals found--nickel and copper--aren't toxic until far, far greater than the amounts emitted. We're not talking lead or cadmium here!

Thanks for the responses everyone. My first response to my friend was to point out that they were doing research on cheap cig-alikes. My current setup is an MVP 2.0 with an Aspire ET-S BDC tank.

In regards to the cartomizer issue, I just purchased an IBTanked setup with a Smok 2.0 ohm carto. Should I be worried about any soldering in the Smok cartos?

Anwyays, thanks again for the quick responses. You guys kicks ....

No worries as far as we know. The cartridge tested was Smoking Everywhere, which is no longer in business. If you're curious, you could contact them to see if the wire is soldered.

However, even the SE cartridge didn't show particulate levels that were of any concern (the articles, of course, differ).

I doubt it, very much. IBTanked sells very high quality stuff. And SmokTech cartos are also very high quality stuff.

The metal particle crap is about the CHEAPIE soldered wires you can get at FastTech, or available in CHEAPIE disposables.

It's wise to be cautious of solder in any circumstance. By definition, it's something to bond two joints together, which requires a lower melting point than the metals being bound. Because it's used in so many places, it tends to melt at very low temperatures.

Which means it's going to turn particulates into aerosols at low temperatures as well.

While I consider it wisest to avoid anything soldered completely when it comes to my vaping toppers (batteries, of course, it doesn't matter), even this cheapie soldered wire didn't produce anything of any concern.

I'm in construction and have been for over 30 years. Minute "nano" particles of everything is what I have been breathing for years. If I was that scared and concerned about minute particles of anything, I would never leave my house! I have lived in Metro Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose. Talk about breathing in particles! The signs posted should read "There is nothing in this state that doesn't cause cancer or reproductive harm"! The air does that all on it's own! What we have become as a society is a bunch of death fearing, health fanatics that believe that if we come in contact with any foreign substance, we will almost surely die from it tomorrow! I for one don't want to live forever. Given the sad state of the US, the world in general, who the heck wants to prolong their time any more than needed. We will all die at one time or another. Some sooner than others. Why not try to enjoy the time we have and not fear the time we don't. You only get one ticket on this ride! Make use of it and quit worrying about time you don't have!

Yeah that is exactly how I feel. Everyone dies so you might as well enjoy the time you have.

Indeed it is. This has been a great resource for me since I started getting into vaping a few months ago. I was dipping a can of copenhagen a day and decided I needed a cheaper non tobacco alternative. Bought a good ego c and aspire tank setup and haven't looked back. Funny thing though, I was at a bachelor party this last weekend and had a few dips....spit them out within five minutes and grabbed my vape pen. I love vaping now.
