DIY battery mod tutorial for a newbie

Odd place for this, but the modders forum seemed like to place for the modding-experienced, so...

Where can I find a good, basic, understandable tutorial for DIY mods? It's been years since middle school science, so electrical work baffles me. I'm pretty certain I could pick it up pretty easily if I knew where to start and where to go from there. Any suggestions?
