Was feeling bored tonight, decided to make a coil winder since I've been having a hard time with my hands/fingers. I walked around in Lowes for what seemed like forever trying to find *cheap* parts to use, ended up with this stuff.

Will probably take it apart and build it again a little bit smaller, but was fun to build.
All parts from Lowes, except the clamp which I got at Harbor Freight.

Hey whatever works for you! I use one of these.

lol, I started with that... but my eyesight kinda sucks right now, and my hands don't seem to be too steady these days... so the rig helps... but I actually ended up picking up the one from Michael's and am using that, mostly because it has the right gauge rod (the hanger was a bit too thick). Oh well, it was still fun to make. :)

I built something almost exactly like this for winding coils to make chainmail. My rig is more robust, since it's designed for armour grade stuff. I had the exact same thought about making a reduced version for rebuilding, once I started to work on that.

I have a collection of mandrels between 3/4" and 3/64" that I use for jewellery. I'll try and remember to document my first recoil so they can be seen. Drill bits are great though if you're only doing a few turns.
