DIY Nightmare -- Help...?

Okay, I do realize that this is not a perfect science yet. However, I'm having some problems over here and I thought I would ask some of the more experienced mixers on the board, i.e. Walrus, Kate, etc..., if they have had similar issues or know how to resolve.

I have a 901. I jumped on board the PV train when I saw a news report on e-cigs. I had quit smoking for 2 1/2 months and I was having a really hard time with it. So, I thought, I will try this e-cigarette thing and see if it helps. I honestly thought that I would hate it. So, you can imagine my shock when I received my 901 and un packaged it, loaded it up, and took my first drag. I knew immediately I would be hooked.

I, like many others, became obsessed. I read the forums...did the research...all while toking on my new carcinogen-free toy. :D Life was good.

So, I realized that I wanted to get into the DIY genre. I'm in it. I'm reading posts. Checking reviews. Ingredients list. Trying to find Lorann's locally. Between the internet and local buys, I now am sitting in front of a mountain of Lorann's, 36 TW UF, PG, VG, Syringes, etc. Then, BOOM goes the dynamite...

I made a few mixes with Lorann's now with the same result. I started by filling a couple of carts. At first, all was well. Rich flavor. Good vapor. But, after 5 or 6 hits, I get a terrible burning taste and smell. It invaded my nose. Made me sneeze. I liken it to vaping a tarantula. Interesting...but far from tasty.

So, I cleaned my carts, blew out my attys, and reloaded the polyfill with commercial juice. Same. Terrible burning smell. Not tasty. Got rid of that cart, tried a new cart. Blew out the atty. Fresh commercial juice. Bang. Fixed. Taste fine again. But, still getting that burning hit every now and again.

So, I washed the atty (as recommended in the Spikey video) and let it dry. Yeah, no...that killed the atomizer. Luckily, I had a backup. So, I tried again. More DIY juice on a new atty. Same results. What's the deal? I've noticed that if I drip straight on the atomizer itself (without a cart fill) that I get a different, equally frustrating, result. It gives me nice flavor at first. A few hits and I get the same thing. But, if I just keep dripping on the atty frequently, I can minimize that burning taste/smell. It still happens. But, it's minimal compared to the other way. But, the problem is, that's eating up a lot of product for no good reason.

So, am I doing something wrong. I'm mixing according to the ratios in the recipe threads. I'm ready to pull my hair out. At this point, I have all of these materials gathered here in front of me and I just wish I wouldn't have bought it and stuck with the commercial juice. Maybe just cut the stronger stuff to stretch it a bit. I don't know. Anyone want to buy a small arsenal of DIY supplies? :-x
Anyway, thanks for listening. Maybe someone can help.

Neither here nor there
Sounds like your atty is getting too dry and starting to burn. I would guess that the Lorann's vapes at a different temp than your base juice. Either you're vaping the flavor out and burning the juice, or vaping the juice and burning the flavor. I think the second scenario is more likely.

I don't know what can be done, but it sounds like a feasable explanation, anyway.

Thus far, I have used the Creme De Menthe, Butter Rum, Coffee, & Chocolate. Maybe more. I can't really remember right now.
I would say that Sun is correct. It is an equipment issue. Do you notice the the led on the battery lights up all by it's self? Your problem is an over heating issue. This is caused by either letting the cart run too low on liquid or wen dripping burning the fluid off and continued heating of the element. Make sure the element is not getting hot when not in use.

i would go a different route and ask...

how do you inhale?

not sure why, but if i throat inhale like i would a real cig, i get that nasty, acrid, burnt taste. if you mouth puff like you would a cigar, then inhale, i don't get that nasty burnt taste.

but again...all that could be hardware related as well, but that's how i avoid that :)

But, wait. No, that can't be it. Because I added a bit of coffee to some 24mg coffee juice that I already had to strengthen it up. And that is doing it too. Same results.

You're not alone. I had the same experience, with coffee in particular, using a 901 atomiser, using both recipes and simply adding to commercial juice. I think it's important to keep in mind that not everyone necessarily has the same tastebuds and/or sensitivities. You see the same in opinions on different flavors/brands of commercial liquid -- what one person may love, another may truly dislike.

You might try using a flavor that has little or no food coloring in it, since that may be the problem. I haven't, so I can't make that judgment.

I don't think it's necessarily faulty equipment or a bad recipe -- it could very well be your individual tastebuds and/or mucous membranes.

Clarify "throat" inhale for me... I take a primer puff. Then, I take a shallow, long drag. Let it gather in my mouth...then inhale. Is that not right...

well people have different methods, but that has worked out best for me.

sorta hard to explain :) i puff with my cheeks, i dont pull any into my lungs until i've puffed it in, then inhale.
