There are many examples of inline volt meters here but I wanted a unit which also displays amps so I can see how much strain I'm putting on my battery without having to use Ohm's Law calculator every time.
There are lots of combined volt/amp meters available but they all need an external power source so neatly building one into a tank is not an option. So I sourced a suitable project case and found one that has the perfect measurements for this project.
The meter I've chosen has 2 trim pots inside so I can calibrate it with my multi meter. Lots of them don't have this option so if you measure they're off then you can't do anything about it.This one measures from 0 to 10 Amps but there are also versions which can go much higher. I doubt if these are having a built-in shunt though.

Parts list on eBay

Meter $4.91 free shipping
Switch 12 pcs $2.82 free shipping
Case 2pcs $5.29 free shipping

The spring loaded 510 connector on the right is the bottom of an old mini Vivi Nova

Overall cost: less than $10
