Hi guys,
Its coming down to Christmas time and the wife is on me as to what mod I want so I am down between the VS DNA 40 or a Sigeli 100 Plus mod. I have the VS DNA 30 and love it sometimes I wish I had a bit more power but idk how much would be enough. I normally build .5-.8 with 24 guage. Any tips?!?!

There is absolutely NO QUESTION at least in my opinion that the DNA40 is the better option here. It's not about watts... It's about the temperature protection it has. When I first learned of the DNA40 I was one of those guys who thought, "So what? I don't get dry hits... I don't burn my wick... What possible reason could I want this device?" I generally ran drippers at 50-60W anyway so the 40W of the DNA40 wasn't exactly tickling my fancy. To say I was highly skeptical is an understatement.

But me being the person I am, wanted to try out this "new technology". I figured worst case scenario I'd buy it, try it out, then resale it. I was already using a 75W device and had ordered the Sig 100. Even before the 100 arrived I was already looking at the T8 (150W), the 180W God mod, wondering which would be the next purchase.

Then the DNA40 arrived. At the risk of sounding like some sort of evangelist, it changed my vaping life forever. Even though their early production run had some screen glitch issues with a lot of boards (I was unlucky enough to receive one of the affected boards) I could already see the potential.

Let me throw this out there just to give you an idea, even though this should probably be more of a closing statement. How good is the DNA40? I have a LOT of mods... I used all of the higher powered ones quite often. It was only the lower power regulated mods that got left on the sidelines. You know how many of them I use now? Two... BOTH DNA40 devices... Since the arrival of that very first DNA40 device (got it the day of release) I haven't TOUCHED one single other mod. The Sig 100? I sold it unopened because I knew I'd never touch it again. It was THAT big of a game change for me. So much so that when I knew I needed to RMA my first board to have it replaced by Evolv because of the screen glitch I didn't want to go a week or so without it so I bought a SECOND DNA40 JUST to keep one going while it was being replaced.

So back to the original question... What could the DNA40 offer an experienced vaper like myself? Someone who never had a problem with burning wick, dry hits, or anything like that in the first place? Everything and then some...

First, I prided myself on my builds. The flavor out of them was remarkable. Even guys that worked at a local B&M would often comment about how incredible the flavor was out of my builds. I thought I was doing everything right... NEVER a hint of a burnt taste... Never anything but juice.... WRONG... That's what I thought... Especially compared to other builds or setups I had tried... But the truth is, I WAS getting it, I just didn't realize it. The first time I experienced a vape from the DNA40 I realized just how bad my "perfectly awesome" builds were. There was juice... and that was it... Nothing... No other taste... pure 100% wonderful remarkable juice. It was like bliss... It was like everyone I knew had been drinking water all their lives and telling me it was a wonderful refreshing glass of coca-cola... Then suddenly I got to taste a REAL coca-cola... The flavor was absolutely indescribable.

Second, the power wasn't what I expected. I had been running drippers at an average of 50-60 watts, sometimes 20-30 watts, other times 75 watts... But average 50+... So needless to say I was a little worried I'd find the DNA40 lacking... I was wrong. I was blowing clouds at 40W that compared to what I was getting out of the 50-60 watts on other devices. I'm not a cloud chaser by any means... I'm a flavor guy all the way... but clouds usually go hand in hand with that usually. And did they ever. With a dual coil in my atomic I can blow gigantic thick clouds but most importantly? They are just absolutely full of rich dense thick flavor.

Third, the convenience. The first night I had my DNA40 device I sat on the couch with about 20 bottles of juice and a dripper. I'd drip a few drops, enjoy flavors that I didn't even realize were so amazing. Some juices I hadn't even liked tasted completely different and wonderful now. I'd vape them till the wicks completely dry... Yet not one tiny hint of burnt taste... Just a perfectly white dry wick without a single scorch or dark mark on it. Then when there was no vapor left I'd drop a few drops of a different juice... There was absolutely NO cross over from flavors... None... The old flavor was completely gone... The new was all you could taste... It truly was almost a religious experience...

That's about all I've got to say about that... :D

I don't really have any rtas that I can pop open at the moment. Here's a pic of an atomic I just put new coils in. It's dual 12 wraps of 30awg with 3mm I.d. Comes out to .12 ohm.

Nice answer man. I've been going back and forth between the sig, ipv3, and the vs dna40 for the past few weeks. Been leaning towards the vs mainly for the evolv chip, build quality, and warranty. Not to mention the new temp control option. I'm definitely sold on this unit. Quick question though, are you primarily using 30 awg ni200 wire? Any other gauges? Also when building you coils do you pulse them and compress to get them to glow evenly as you do with kanthal? Definitely looking forward to getting this device. Been extremely intrigued by it since pbusardo dropped the dna40 video with Brandon.

I primarily use 30awg. It's a little more difficult to work with, but I find it gives the best balance of vape quality and resistance for dual coils (pretty much all i run). If I build a single coil I sometimes use 28awg. It's rare though as 30awg works just as well for those as well. I work harden it to make it easier to work with.

As for pulsing, yes, absolutely. I turn off TP and turn the wattage way down, just enough to get a faint glow. They are ALWAYS uneven and since TP works with an average temp across the entire coil(s) if it's not firing even you aren't going to get a good vape. If using spaced coils it's no as important as they'll usually fire fairly evenly from the start, but with contact (i.e. micro coils) which is what i prefer, it's pretty much a requirement. It's not so much compressing as it is with kanthal as it is a mixture of compressing and nudging. I'll compress (VERY gently), nudge, run the tip of the tweezers over the coils, etc... It's a little bit of a PITA but you get a feel for it pretty quickly. Once firing evenly it's well work the effort. You have to just barely glow them, get the Ni200 too hot and carbon deposits will start to form on the wire.

Thanks brother. Stumbled upon the DNA40 Nickel Coil Build thread too and been reading through all the posts. Going to try to do as much research as I can on NI200 coil builds while waiting on my shark. One other thing....what about cleaning your coils? Does the low wattage pulsing take care of that?

If you mean initially, I usually wipe the wire down with some 99.9% iso before hand just to clean off any residue. I'm sure it's unnecessary but just something I've always done even with kanthal. The pulsing should take care of the rest.

If you mean when changing out wick? I don't. I never change wick. If I were using cotton then it wouldn't be so much of an issue, but I use rayon and rayon has to be stuff VERY tight in the coils. So tightly in fact that I use a "cross threading" method. Meaning I pull wick into the coil from both sides at the same time to equalize the force against the coil to keep from completely destroying it. It ends up so tight in the coil itself (it's just the way rayon has to be done to get maximum wicking performance) that any attempt to remove it pretty much completely destroys the coil, so it's really just not worth it to me.

On the plus side, I've found that wicking last WAY longer with the DNA40 anyway. When I wicked kanthal builds with cotton I'd end up swapping it every couple of days... With rayon I could go several days... Now with the DNA40 I can run the same wick a week or two and you can't even hardly tell it's been used. I just pulled my orchid down the other night which i built when I first got the DNA40 over a month ago... It probably had a good 30+ tanks through it and the coils just BARELY had gunk on them and the wick was barely even darkend.

Yeah I was referring to dry burning coils to get the gunk off after you change wicks. I still haven't tried rayon yet but plan on picking some up for the dna 40 builds. 30 plus tanks and hardly any gunk is mind blowing. Awesome stuff man. One other thing.....since moving to the dna 40/ni200 builds have you gone back to kanthal any?

Well bare in mind the orchids don't hold very much, I think it's about 2.5ml but still.

And honestly, no, I haven't touched a single other mod or build since switching to the dna40 with nickel. I had a list of mods I was waiting on to be released to buy, but after I got the dna40 that list has shrunk to 0. I have no interest in any other mods right now. Yeah, it's that good.

Great stuff my man. Glad you are enjoying it so much. Can't wait to get mine. Thanks for the advice.
