I don't think there is any difference in terms of functionality on the dna. It seems that, in order to allow use of different value pots, it basically just figures out the total resistance of the pot and gets the position of the pot by percentage. Pot turned all the way down = lowest setting, pot all the way up = highest setting.

If you take a multimeter and test the resistance on a 100ohm pot between the wiper (middle lead) and the + side when turned all the way down you'll get something around 0. Then test between the wiper and the - side you'll get something around 100. Turn the pot up a quarter way, between one side you'll get 25 and the other 75.
