Very impressive, I was going to guess a wax.

It was somthing I started doing almost by accident, then I found out its a popular method with knife makers for sealing and finishing wooden handles. I've recently learnt that acetone can be wiped on the bare wood before first aplication to deepen its penetration, it's not as good as stabilizing, but it's very good compared to varnish or wax.
