Do coils go bad?

My Smpl mech mod isn't working the way it usually does. I'm getting very light drags/pulls.
I've checked everything, thrice. The only thing left I'm wondering is perhaps the coil.

I've been using it about a month. When it gets gunky I've been washing it under hot water.
My question is, do coils go bad after awhile? It's still ohming out to what it's initial build was, .59/60, it's 26 or 24 awg

First few drags will be fine, then they just start getting weaker. Coil is screwed in snug, no shorts I can see, battery is full charge, firing switch is fine, center pin is protruding same as always. Wicking is alright.
I'm getting unsure about continuing to use my Smpl tube till I can figure out what's going on.

Any insight would be appreciated,
Thanks!

I'll dry fire my used coil and run some water on it to clean it. I'll rewick and get back to vaping. Once they gunk up again, I'll built new coils. In my experience, my coils will gunk up in about a week or two, I'll clean once, vape for another week on them then replace.
I find that after the first cleaning they get gunked up more quickly. Just my personal experience, your mileage may vary.
I generally entirely change the coil after about 2-3 weeks.
Are you building your own coils or using prebuilt coils?

when you dry-fire a coil and splash it with water repeatedly over long periods of time, the coil may get "tempered" over time, meaning the kanthal gets stiffer and coil resistance goes higher slightly. however, that doesn't seem to be the case since you've checked the ohm reading.

another possibility is that the voltage drop of the smpl mod itself is going up throughout the normal course of wear and tear. I personally clean my smpl once every 2-3months by disassembling the firing switch and cleaning the threads in the switch, 510 thread, and the threads in the tube that make contact with the switch with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. hope this works out for you!

1: Joined 2013: I'll take it you know the issues with the smpl type mods.

2: The mod is the battery compartment; the coil is in the rda; you do not state what rda you are using

3: "First few drags will be fine, then they just start getting weaker"
Sounds like your battery is getting old;
You didn't mention what battery.

4: "I've been using it about a month. When it gets gunky I've been washing it under hot water"
you don't mention dryburn... you don't dry burn your coil?????

I dunno; it's either weak/old battery or coil gunk, and I can't believe you don't dryburn so I'll go with weak battery

Thank You Billgharley and SpartanM, and Edyle!

I built the coil. I generally make mine, occasionally I get lazy and throw in a prebuilt :)
I usually do change the coil after a few dry fires and water cleanings. I've left this one on just to see how
long it would last. Guess I found out, hahaha.
I didn't think about cleaning my Smpl. I will definitely make that part of my routine!

I should have mentioned the rda, its a mad hatter mini. The battery is 2 months old, LGDBHE4 18650 25R 2500 mah flat top, I think Samsung. Full charge. I dry burn then run under hot water, and repeat till coil is clean.

No problem Pearl B! :) and I didn't think of cleaning my smpl at first, but since it's a faux hybrid, the voltage drop is apparently a lot more noticeable when compared to other mech mods (most of which I don't clean lol). after letting it dry for a couple seconds, it was hitting as hard as the first day I got it!

PS: your battery is a Samsung 25r, same as mine!

Coils themselves can last weeks or months if not years.. BUT the wick might only last a day. The GUNK will not be removed with soap and water. That GUNK is carmelized and char'd sugars. You might get it off with a solvent like alcohol. But the only real way is dry burning. The wick will need replacing , if cotton or rayon (can't dry burn those). Silica, stainless and ceramic wicks can be dry burned, clean, IN the coil. Dirty and gunky coils will reduce performance, significantly..

If you are noticing an overall performance drop and your coil/coils are fine you might have to clean the contacts.

I would take apart the SMPL switch and wash it with hot water and soap. If you want to go all out, polish it then wipe it down the iso alcohol. Clean the atomizer pin and your battery's contacts as well. I go over those with a polish rag and wipe it down with iso alcohol too.

If you put your RDA under water, you want to make sure it's fully dry. Water can get under the atomizer pin. If you can't take it out or don't want to just blast it with compressed air.
