I tell people I was a 2+ pack a day smoker for 30 years . . . what I am often too embarrassed to admit is that the last couple of years, it's been closer to 3 packs a day. :(

I decided to try e-cigs in January in an effort to cut down. I knew there would be no way I'd be able to completely quit analogs. I mean, I had tried EVERYTHING, so I was pretty much resigned to being a smoker. But I did want to cut down, and I thought maybe e-cigs might help.

The first couple of days, I dramatically cut down my tobacco usage, down to just a couple of cigarettes . . . without even really trying. I think it was on Day 4 that I had my last tobacco cigarette. I've since broken down twice and each time, I put the tobacco cigarette out within a few puffs. Just simply nasty. Basically, I've been tobacco free for about 2 1/2 months. Nothing short of a miracle.

I agree with those who suggest that you don't need to immediately quit tobacco unless that's what you want to do. Most of us find that it's fairly easy to reduce our tobacco intake without much effort. Totally quitting tobacco seems to be easier for some than others.

My best adivce, other than not putting too much pressure on yourself to quit tobacco, is to vape MEDIUM or LOW nicotine solutions, and then occasionally spike with HIGH when you really feel the craving. When people first start vaping, they tend to vape A LOT . . . especially heavy smokers. It's really easy to overdo the nicotine. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I think I read somewhere that vaping a couple of drops of a very high nicotine solution was essentially equivalent to smoking 5 cigarettes in terms of nicotine intake. My figures may be off, but the basic premise is right--it's a heck of a lot of nicotine if you're vaping as often as you smoke.

So if you vape, say, a medium solution and then start feeling the craving for an analog, you can spike your cartridge with a high nicotine solution, which takes the edge off for many of us.

Congratulations on your decision to embark on this adventure. Yeah, it''s higher maintenance than just lighting up a cigarette, but the benefits make it sooooooooooooooo worth the extra hassle.
