A question which goes through the minds of most Vapors repeatedly is do I need a mod? Which then leads to next question, if so which one should I get? Let's take a look at the first question because your response will generally do a good job to narrow down the answer for the second question.
Common reason(s) to need a mod:
Now if you identify with reasons 1-3, 8, and 9 then there are plenty of Mods that can work for you. So to narrow down your search let's see what kind of Vapor you are.
How many and what type of KR batteries are you going through a day?
The new 5v OMG utilizes 2 3.0V LiFePO4 RCR123A Tenergy batteries 3.0v 750 mAh batteries rated at 500 cycles (recharges). These batteries are chemistry safe, meaning they will not go boom and catch on fire. Happens. (breach that subject later) When stacked they provide 6v and are rated at 750 mAh. Now as a rule I am of the belief that most batteries tend to be a little overrated so I always lower the mAh by 10%.
But we'll use 750 mAh for this example since these are what comes with the 5v OMG. If you are below 750 mAh from the chart above, you can expect this unit to last you all day or longer. (I suggest you have 4 batteries total) As a rule stacking Li-on batteries is frowned upon because things go boom. However rules change in technology and lots of mods use stacked batteries although many manufacturers will advise not to stack batteries in their PVs.
So if you are over 750 mAh range and never want to change batteries through the day this particular PV may not be the Mod for you. The good news is Tenergy makes a slightly higher powered battery line that is 900 mAh the Tenergy CR123A 3v which generally runs around $11.00. Making this Mod almost the same price as the batteries.....which is ridiculously low.
Whether you go to work in a suit or swing a hammer, some jobs just make vaping difficult. Let's say you don't want to be bothered carrying a PCC or 3-4 batteries, Cartomizers, or Juice. You would like to be able to take a unit that holds a days worth of juice and not deal with refilling. You don't want anything flimsy, it has to be all one sealed unit that does not leak, and will hold enough juice. Then you should be looking for a either a Tank or Bottom Feeder Tank Mod.
So the last question comes down to...do you want a steady 5v or not? There is a reality to vaping and voltage...one voltage setting does not deliver optimum flavor for all juices...it's not a one-size fits all. The good thing is to get around this atomizer manufacturers can help tweak the wattage and flavor a little by the use of different ohm rated (amount of resistance) cartomizers.
The ohm standards being: 1.5 (low resistance...anthing under 2.3 is considered low), 2.5. (standard...anything between 2.4 of 2.8 is standard), and 3.0 (high resistance 2.8 and up) so if a flavor is close but seems too hot using a 2.5 Ohms cartomizer it could be just right at 3.0 ohms.
Personally I find the that optimum flavor can change past the margin of play a different rated cartomizer can provide with a static voltage output. An example of this is 2 well known V4L flavors Wow 555 and Premium RY4. I find Wow 555 on a 2.8 ohm rated cartomizer at 3.4v is perfect and Premium RY4 is great with the same Cartomizer at 5.1v. Both of these flavors like the other 150 or so flavors at V4L are tuned to work when matched to Wow and Cool Carts in a close range 3.7v-5v with VK batteries and PTs.
Personally when I jumped into a VV Mod a year ago there was only 1 other brand you could buy, I had it, it worked but it was plagued by first gen issues. The first 6 months before I owned it I never thought there could be such a difference in flavor by changing the voltage. So if you would like to be able to fine-tune your vaping perhaps a variable voltage unit might be the best for you. This way you stay with the Ohm rated cartomizers you like and simply adjust the voltage according to your personal tastes making optimum vaping easier.
Things you want to look for in a Mod:
1. Track record: Just because something is new doesn't mean it's good. Problems can arise immediately or over a short period of time through use. A month or two of scanning the Modders Forum after a release is a good way to see if there are issues...what are owners saying? Especially look for anything mentioning "Button" issues, no button, no workie! So spend your $70 -$100.00+ wisely because if you get stuck with a lemon after warranty....well tough luck. The good thing is in the case of the 5v OMG you won't have to buy batteries or a recharger again and the 5v OMG is inexpensive to replace.
The unit will either come solo or in a kit. Most basic kits include the unit, batteries, and a recharger so make sure to keep that in mind. Sometimes it pays-off to shop for items separately. Batteries aren't the only things that go boom, rechargers do too so you should check into them. I have a similar Tenergy Charger that is sold with 5v OMG and it has always performed flawlessly. Having a charger that charges multiple sizes of batteries is always preferred over a single dedicated size charger.
2. Form and Function: A comfortable natural feel in your hands including the button is critical. This is a unit that you will be using daily so the button feel and it's location are pretty important. How will you be carrying it around all day, would a slender box unit be better than a long heavy tube shaped unit? Perhaps a stealthy mini-unit would do, they are available.
3. Warranty and Reseller: Who is standing behind this product and if I don't like it can I return it for a full cash refund? How long is the warranty and how does shipping get paid should it break or be returned. Is the Reseller the manufacturer of the product? Does the manufacturer or reseller have a open public forum, like the V4L sub-forum?
4. Safety: A lack in safety protection both in the Mod and the battery is an instant deal breaker. Although it is rare batteries in Mods sometimes go boom, and it's bad, like really really bad. 5. Price: Weigh the options of the 4 noted items above, there is plenty of information available in the Modders Forum and at the Manufacturer and Resellers sub-forums.
