Thanks for the encouragement wv2win. I'm usually pretty handy, although electronics are a bit beyond me. I do at least own a soldering iron, and can do basics.

I will want a standard 510 battery for going out (i HATE people staring at me) so I think a bat mod will be good for around the house. (I don't work, so most of my time is at home anyway). I'm reading the directions for the nicostick now, trying to make sense of them. Thankfully it looks to have been pretty thoroughly discussed. While the terminology is over my head, I at least have a mostly functional knowledge of electronics. (why didn't they teach that in school anyways? sheesh!)

annah, sounds like you've made a good decision to meet your needs. :thumb: If you need any help, feel free to pm with any questions you have. I've done several Nicostick box mods (and have since moved on to building many other mods). The Nicostick box mod is very good, easy to make, and very cost-efficient. Plus, with it's small size....you could actually take it out in public (if you wanted to) since it can be hidden in your hand. ;)

I'd vote for the 510. Nice, easy draw and lots of vapour. Battery life isn't great to say the least, but you're so lucky as to be a lady so you can carry around a purse full of spare batteries, right?

The 510 had a few quirks in the beginning, but the quality seems to have improved a lot since it first came out.

Technique is important regardless of model, though. Almost everyone I've seen moving from cigs to e-cigs first tries to draw on it like they would on a real cigarette. And when at first they don't feel a lot of response, they draw harder, which of course only cools down the atomiser so causes even less vapour to come out. Also, sucking too hard can cause liquid to spill through which is nasty. A long, soft draw is the way to go.

That being said, my first experience was with a Gamucci disposable. While it turned me on to e-cigs and I'm forever grateful for that, you wouldn't believe how hard those things are to draw on. If the 901 is anything like that, then yeah, you'll be shocked by how easy the 510 is to use. Just don't stray too far from a spare battery and keep a little liquid handy.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice. I suppose I should have given more info along with my OP.

I would love to have a mod device, but it is totally and completely out of my budget right now.

Save up for a Chuck or Little Chuck. Best custom mod out there, and they come in colors, and you can get it for a 901, 801, or 510, and they are only $75. Much better than the GG or prodigy or any of the other way overpriced mods...

did my "research" on recomendations, joye 510, 2nd day works like a charm!!! 1.5 packs a day for 40 years, down to two .... logs, second day! woooooooooooot just gotta keep that cart wet, mega batts on the way, should cause some length to my charge regiment, then a passthru is next...........luv this thang

When using the spring mod with the 510 megabatts, the added power was delivering juice in my mouth. With the normal batts, I was wrapping the polyfill around the spring with the polyester fibers running from top to bottom of the cart. For the megabatts, I am now wrapping the polyfill with polyester fibers running around the spring. This really helps keep juice out of my mouth. I should have tried it long ago.

I've had a 901 for 10 days now. And it's a PITA. The battery is ok, I have a manual. But I just don't like it. It's really really hard to draw on (like my cheeks are sore! and yes, I am doing long slow draws) and the vapor really isn't that great. It's ok, but not great. And I need a bigger throat hit I think to make me happy.

So I'm gonna buy a new something next week, but the question is what. Do I want a 510 or an 801? If you have both, which do you prefer?

Make sure you are not flooding the atty. It sound like that is the problem but I could easily be wrong. As a side note, when I fist started vaping there was no such thing as a "throat hit". I only experienced that after I was below 5 cigs a day. Then again I have let 2 pack a day smokers try my 510 and they cough. It's all subjective but just make sure you are not dealing with a flooded atty.
