I know it's been done before, but I had to post again on this subject. My mother in law (84 years old) just visited a specialist about the swelling in her feet and legs. He said it was primarily due to her smoking. He asked her if she would like to quit and then recommended her to try vaping and gave her a business card from a local shop. Obviously the Dr. has had some type of positive personal experience with vaping, either his own or from someone who convinced him of theirs. Either way it is good p.r. and the more of this type the better in my humble opinion. Of course, they used to recommend certain cigarette brands, too. Any thoughts on this?

Your MIL has a good doctor. Guide her to whatever mg/ml ratio helps her quit, and encourage her to gradually wean herself to 3 mg/ml, which is very minimal, yet still satisfying for most. Don't expect her to quit entirely.

Thanks 0mg. (thought that was oh my god:) I've tried to set her up with a little tank and battery but failed. She can't hold steady enough to refill anyway but said all the juice I bought her is too strong. I spent quite a few bucks. I thought about cig-a-likes for her. Any suggestions on that? Are they makin any good ones now?

Well... obviously I don't know what medical problems your MIL has... but vaping actually, indirectly, *caused* me to have swollen ankles and extremely painful lumpy feet; I could barely walk. I was already dehydrated before I started vaping, and vaping made it so much worse, it thoroughly scrambled my electrolytes, causing the edema.

What fixed it, initially, was coconut water -- at first I was drinking about 12oz of it a day, and within a week, the swelling in my ankles and the painful lumps in my feet were GONE -- but I found that anytime I didn't get that 12oz of coconut water, they'd come right back, so in addition, I also decreased my caffeine intake by 80% and lowered my sodium intake by about 50%. Decreasing caffeine meant I wasn't stimulating my bladder so much, so I'm able to hang on to more of my hydration, and decreasing sodium enabled the high potassium of the coconut water to truly *correct* my electrolyte problem, rather than just putting a band-aid on it. Now, I drink about 6-8 oz of coconut water, mixed with pineapple juice, daily, but even if I go a bit lighter, the edema doesn't return, since I'm supporting my hydration in those other ways, and the lower sodium intake means I'm not screwing up my electrolytes so drastically.

Any reason to get someone to try e-cigs instead of smoking is a good thing, but I'm not really sure how smoking, in and of itself, caused the edema, unless it's bringing on something like congestive heart failure. Do you know if she's ever tried any coconut water, or if she takes any medication that somehow alters her sodium/potassium balance?

Hey thanks for that info, but if she has to cut her coffee down, idk. I'll tell her about the coconut water. I just recently tried frying in coconut oil. It works and tastes great. A little pricey but has health benefits. She takes a multitude of pills and drinks water continuously. Does coconut water come canned or do you mix it?

For cigalikes, I recommend Electronic Cigarettes | Smokeless E-Cigs | Smokeless Image Automatics might be easier for her to manage. You can get blank cartridges for her, and refill them for her. Go to Vapor E Cig Juice | Electronic Cigarette Nicotine Juice for juices. I see they now have 3 mg/ml, as well as 6 mg/ml and 0 mg.ml. Those were my first vendors.

That is surprising. I can just imagine a lawsuit and charges of malpractice. Don't get me wrong, I fully support and believe in what the doctor did, but, handing out a business card for a legally un-approved medical device could be seen in a bad way.

My doctor said, "good" when I told him that I had switched. That made me think about it.

Anyway, I think it great that vaping is being accepted by a "licensed" medical authority.

I hope it helps your MIL.

You can buy it in cans, the "Goya" brand, but I found I couldn't use that brand because I have asthma, and it contains sulfites. I buy the "Zico" brand, which comes in a liter-sized carton; at Walmart around here, they're $3.98 (at Walmart they're on the aisle with the "mixers" -- tonic water and all that junk) -- kinda pricey, you're right, but definitely worth it! Zico actually has 2 diff kinds that comes in the liter-sized cartons; the one I buy says "natural pure premium coconut water - not from concentrate" and the potassium is 360mg per 8oz -- the other one is even higher, but even the one I buy is 'salty' enough tasting that I have to mix it with pineapple juice, so I don't even WANT to think how awful the other one tastes. The Goya brand, in cans (on the "ethnic food" aisle, at Walmart), is much sweeter, but I think it may have added sugar, and the potassium is not as high -- it actually tastes better, but isn't as good, nutritionally. The Zico could probably be mixed with any fruit juice, the taste is pretty light, if a bit salty, but I use pineapple juice because it's also quite high in potassium -- much higher than OJ. I think I read that apricot nectar is also high in potassium.

I understand it's hard to make these kinds of lifestyle changes, and it does seem that the older we get, the harder it becomes -- that thing about old dogs and new tricks. :D But I just started having 2 cups of "real" tea in the morning, instead of 10 cups all day long, and then the rest of the day, I drink decaf iced tea -- maybe she could go to decaf coffee, for most of the day, and just have the hi-test in the morning. :thumb:

As for cigalikes... I just read yesterday, somewhere around the forum, that the Mark10s are excellent.

What tank and battery was it? Some sort of starter kit?

Anyway:
1: When people change to vaping, they tend to cough alot as the lungs start clearing out;
I'd be a bit concerned about an 84 year old having a coughing fit like I used to have last year;

2: If you get a tank setup, the simplest eliquid you can get is straight USP grade PG.
If she can at least find that vapeable, that would be a good workable baseline to start from.

3: Needlebottle are very usefull for refilling tanks:

4: The cheapest way to vape is with an rda; you'll need to coil/wick it for her;

Thanks so much Andria. On my way to Walmart.

I was TRYING!!! to edit my post when ECF just completely vanished!!! :-x If she has any kind of problems with high blood pressure, kidneys, or anything else that means she takes meds for her sodium/potassium, she probably ought to talk to her doc about the coconut water first -- if she elevates her potassium and she's taking some kinds of meds that messes with that, it might be dangerous for her.

The medical board would not be happy either.

BTW.. my doctor said "hmmmmm". He never again asked if I smoked or wanted Chantrix. He asked once if I was still using the electronic version. He doesn't even ask that now.

It was a kanger t3s with an evod. Do you really recommend drippin for 84 year old beginners??? As far as coughing fits, she has em everyday with the Mistic cigarettes she smokes. Her albuterol inhaler helps. But this woman is hard headed. I think vaping is her only possible way to improve her breathing. The cheapest way I've found to vape is diy your juice. Speaking of which, is there anybody selling eliquid at around 2 bucks per 10ml these days?

It would be interesting to see how the medical board would challenge the Dr. on that issue. I don't think a malpractice suit would fly. I'm with wshanncap and think more doctors should voice their thoughts.

1: Do you think she'll be able to refill the t3s with a needle bottle?
2: Dripping is actually the best way for beginners to start.
There is a misperception that the only way to use a dripper is to use high power, just as there used to be (and still is somewhat) the misperception that your eliquid contains nicotine;
You can coil a dripper with the same 34 or 32 gauge wire that are used in the t3s, the protanks, etc, and save a bundle instead of buying replacement coil heads; Plus with the money you save, you buy a few drippers and have them precoiled and ready for use.
3: Yep the cheapest way to vape is with DIY juice, and the cheapest juice is plain PG.
