I've used Wiltons by itself before and it tasted/smelled fine..but today I decided to cut my PEG liquid 50/50 to bring down the nic strength..It smells like a bad burnt flavor/odor.. (exactly what it tastes like when you cart goes dry..but its not dry..I just dripped onto the atomizer so I know its fine..

Is this normal?8-o

Heating glycerin above 290*C makes it decompose into acrolein, a highly & toxic corrosive gas. I wonder if this is what you're inhaling. Look up acrolein's wikipedia entry.

At 280C it begins to decompose to acrolein and water. This is just below the BP. Most will vaporise unchanged. The % decomposed would vary widely depending on many factors, but is probably <1% taking an average for vaping. Possibly a lot less given that the VG is in a mixture (notwithstanding a certain amount of fractional distillation).

How much is released in the vapor is unknown. Certainly a lot of it polymerises or oxidises onto the coil where it degrades do a carbonized gunk. Smell can detect around 2ppm, and this is the level where it begins to be harmful.

If there is VG in the juice, there will be some acrolein in the vapor. How much though needs more investigation. It is nothing to panic about. Vaping VG is likely 100 times safer than burning tobacco (but it is not totally safe).

PG seems to be heat stable but some people are allergic to it. I find that the thickness of VG helps create a better juice in that it doesn't run where it shouldn't. Whether PEG offers a third way is unknown; there might be a heat degradation issue with PEG.

I can't post links yet, so google MSDS + PEG + Baker. It should be the first result. The MSDS is for PEG 200 - 20000.

As a side note, JTBaker usually has the best MSDS sheet for any given chemical. They are my first choice when researching the safety of an unfamiliar substance.

The MSDS mentioned is: POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL

Are we to presume from this that besides CO2 and CO, the other product of decomposition is harmless? For VG, decomp is dehydration. To get CO2 and CO sounds more like combustion. We need to know more about the decomposition products.

I have noted before decomposition is possible with PEG-200. Starting at just below the BP; for example: Polyethylene Glycol - PEG 200 - SPI Supplies

This is a bit worrying as PEG-300 and PEG-400 might also share this problem (longer chain PEGs are not suitable for vaping as either BP is too high or not liquids).

I believe that PEG cannot decompose to EG (poisonous); but not absolutely certain.

well to get back to your origional question.... yes I get this taste all the time. it's very irritating and I find it really frustrating. (I do like the billows of vapor it produces.

I usually just try to top it off again or do a rinse with my cart and try a different mix.

have you found anything that helps you with this issue?

oh and I've noticed it on the 510, SD and Stick. is it a manual button thing? I don't own any other type so I'm not sure.
