Does the diameter of a Silica Wick matter in RBA's/RDA's?

I have an IGO-W and I'm planning to rebuild it this week for the first time. I was wondering what factor does the size of the Silica Wick have to do with the overall performance of the atty? I think I'm going to get 3mm Silica Wick for my IGO-W because I think my friend is running the same thing. Also whats the difference between nichrome vs. kanthal wire? And how is ekowool vs silica?

The diameter of the wick will determine the diameter of the coil itself. The diameter of the coil will determine how much wire is used and that determines the ohms.

When I wrapped "normal" sized coils, I would fold my 3mm wick in half and then in half again to get 4 pieces of silica in each coil.

I have not used nichrome or ekowool so I cannot comment on those.

Hey there aaroneyes29,
3mm is kind of large, but I have been using it to re-wick/coil the Evod BCC we have. Do not have to have many flavor wicks on top for most of our liquids. As for wire, kanthal appears to be the way to go. Have a buddy that does not like the issue with Ekowool, and went back to silica. He is going to bring me the rest of his Ekowool, and I will try it out........

Watch this and it will help you a lot

Machine screw coil wrap for Vivi Nova / Kanger T3 - YouTube

Also, go to Michaels, and pick up a skein of 100% cotton yarn called "Peaches and Cream"
It makes a fantastic wick.
Just to make sure there isn't any "sizing" or residue in it, I boil a bunch of it, hang it to dry, store in a plastic sandwich bag, and your good to go.
A lot make their own cotton wicks from q-tips or cotton balls, but the yarn is the easiest way for me.
It give a much better flavor than the silica, jut DON'T try to dry burn it.
Remove the wick, dry burn the coil and run a new wick into it. Takes 2 minutes.

Kanthal is better. I use "32" size
Enjoy your new venture, and congrates for quiting.

in drippers I use doubled 3mm with 30g kanthal.

the thickness of the wick will also determine how wet the coil area stays. and how much juice will be heated at any given moment. even when i tried many strands of smaller wick the effect was the same because the heat dries the area under the coil faster then the wick can keep up sometimes, having fatter wick means more juice available at the time of firing the coil, meaning more wick heated=more vapor to some extent. and less time for the area to become saturated again between pulls.
