Nice to put a name with a face - kind of in the dark though :) But you are right Switched. I have stuff that is over a year old and works just fine. I don't clean my atomizers either (typically), though I do clean connections. I find right batt/atty combo, and right liquid wetness of atomizer is pretty key. A VV is a crutch in a way, but it does make life easier when my atty and juice don't work well with my batt & holder of choice.

Exactly Brian. It takes time to learn all this and VV is fine tuning. I am glad that the VV came out as it has permitted us to fine tune to certain finicky liquids. BTW my face can be seen in my profile :) Ya should be on Skype every now and again... just saying :)

It is easy. Tell them to buy an 808/510/etc starter kit with an auto battery from a vendor that doesn't rape the wallet and also has prefilled cartridges. They don't need to fidget with something if they want simple. I think the biggest misconception is that vaping is just like smoking. It's not, nor will it ever be. The sensation will never be the same and the flavor (or lack thereof) will not be the same. That seems to be the hardest thing for people to get over - around me anyways. This doesn't have to be a hobby for people if they don't want it to be, but they have to learn to relax and accept it for what it is if they don't want to put anything into it other than screwing an atomizer/cartomizer on a battery and sucking on it.
You are correct, it does not have to be a hobby but it is much more involved than smoking and that is what turns some people off and the fact that you need to do research to find a fair priced kit from an online vendor is another added inconvenience. I am not sure if you are speaking to me about vaping not being smoking but I can assure you that I know this better than most and that is actually the very first thing that I tell people about vaping. There are ways to make it simple but at a minimum I tell people that they will want to fill their own cartos(otherwise its nowhere near as cheap as it could be) and that task alone makes in more inconvenient than smoking. I am not complaining because I love this, but with the amount of choices that people have, it becomes very hard for people to sift through, and then you have to add in all of the misinformation going around and it confuses people further.

... and that is the hardest part of all:) correcting the mis-infromation.

I think for a lot ( at the least, for me) we would not have made it without Plug n' Play. I think they have there place, for me it was an 808 auto. I bought a disposable at a cigarette store and never took another drag of tobacco again. I found a kit at 7-11 the next day and three days later ordered my first 808 kit. I think I after that there is the natural progression from there.

If I started with dripping I probably wouldn't have made it.

True! My first system was from Safe Cig a no fuss 2 part system that performed well, but was expensive. More importantly, it never got me totally away from analogs. The 510 did that in a matter of a day. Wrt dripping, I only just begun on that journey since switching to 100% VG. Before that I was a cart user employing the HighPing mod.

I mix all my own liquids and although my viscosity is close to all PG liquids, some simply do not wick well in cartos or carts, others perform like champs.

I started on an auto 808 as well and it only lasted for about two weeks... then went to the ego, then the Little Sister VV, then my cherished Grand. I can't stand dripping unless taste testing.
I made a bottom fed mod and enjoyed it for about a week, but that doesn't mean bottom fed systems are not good, just not for me. Dripping OTOH is a PITA regardless of the benefits. If I could go to carts extensively I would be a happy man. I love my eGo T but it will only vape 2 of my liquids without causing some of the reported problems. This is not a problem as I vape several flavours throughout the day.

I started with the 510. Was going to get a 901 but the common thread in those days was "get a 510 from cignot" which I did.
I don't think a person has to spend weeks reading through material but of course I did. I spent a week reading information before ordering. But if you just get whatever, then use the search option or ask about the issues your having there will be many answers. You just read through the answers to you issues and then in the end just do what I tell you to do and forget the others. JK/JK. No but if you ask you'll get your answer. It may not be the one you want to hear but it will give you a place to start.

I was one of the people that got dooped into ordering from the radio and got 0 nic juice, I took one drag and threw it in the closet but that one drag was enough to make me realize that there was potential so I did like 5card and researched for a week or two and ordered the prodigy v2 but it had just been released and had switch issues. I knew I needed hv so I just started with mods from the get go but the trusty 510 manual got my wife off the cigs. At least that first kit was not a complete loss since it showed me the potrential.

I went from the 510 to mods I built. First was a 5volt, then a variable volt that still works great but it needs a new box. I've dropped it and broke it so many times that this will be the second box for it. I used parts from an old PC to repair the PCB the first time. It dropped so hard the caps broke off the board along with the pot and the box got all messed up but it still vapes like a champ it just needs a new box.

What a novel idea ! Learning how to use the equipment you have in the manner it was intended to be used !!!
And....GASP !...it may take time to learn !!!

Switched...this needs to be stickied in the New Members, the General Discussion, Everything You Wanted to Know, and every "help" sub forum !!!
